ENMU, WEST FLORIDA TIE FOR TITLE
Rain Ends Scoreless Game After 5 Innings
PENSACOLA, FLJennifer Harrer (Sr., RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) faced just 16 batters and recorded 5 strikeouts in 5 innings, as Eastern New Mexico University held the University of West Florida, ranked #5 in NCAA Division II, to a scoreless tie in the championship game of the UWF Classic, March 3 in Pensacola, Fla. The game was ended due to heavy rain, which began immediately following the fifth inning. ENMU and UWF were declared co-champions.

The win and tie gave ENMU a 5-1-1 record during the tournament. The NCAA does not count games against junior colleges in statistics or records, so ENMU was 3-1-1 officially over the weekend, improving the Zias to 8-3-1 on the season.

The Zias had runners at first and second with one out, but UWF pitcher Angie Johnson recorded a strikeout and forced a pop fly to third base to get out of the inning. Harrer faced just one batter over the minimum for 5 innings.

West Florida’s Nikki Johnson singled twice for two of the Argonauts’ three hits, but was thrown out by catcher Sarah Rempp (Sr., C/SS, Marshalltown, IA/Greeley Central H.S., CO) both times while attempting to steal second base.

Four ENMU players achieved one hit apiece against West Florida. Alison Montbriand (Jr., 2B, Austin, TX/Hill College) was 1 for 1, Suzy Seitzinger (Sr., OF/P, Bloomfield, NM/ Bloomfield H.S.) and Jessica Rowley (Jr., SS/OF, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) each went 1 for 2, and Rempp was 1 for 3. Montbriand also reached base when she was hit by a pitch.

In the extra-inning game against Lon Morris, the score was tied 1-1 after seven innings. The international tie-breaker was used in the 8th inning, with Kim Paschall (Sr., OF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) opening the stanza as the designated runner at second base. Karena Martinez (Fr., C/OF, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) bunted Paschall to third, then Rempp drove her home with a single.

Rachel Mohler (Jr., 3B/1B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) followed with a 2-run homer to give the Zias a 3-run lead. Rhoten kept Lon Morris off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning to complete the victory. Several
