KATHERYNE HICKMAN NAMED GREATEST ZIA; JAMES STEWART SELECTED GREATEST GREYHOUND
PORTALES, NM — Senior basketball forward Katheryne Hickman (6’0”, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) and senior football defensive end James Stewart (6’1”, 228 lbs., Anton, TX/New Mexico Military Institute) received the top awards at the Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Awards Banquet, Monday, Apr. 30 at the Campus Union Ballroom. Sports Celebration 2000-01 was highlighted by Hickman receiving the Greatest Zia Award and Stewart receiving the Greatest Greyhound Award.

Katheryne HickmanHickman played all four seasons at Eastern New Mexico. She finished her career ranked 5th all-time on the ENMU women’s basketball scoring chart with 1,234 points. She averaged 11.8 points per game during her career, including 17.6 points per game this past season. She was named First Team All-LSC South in 2000-2001, and earned Honorable Mention All-LSC South honors in 1998-99 and 1999-00.

She scored a career-high 35 points against Abilene Christian University on Feb. 17, 2001, after scoring 30 points against West Texas A&M on Jan. 23, 2001. Her 35 points against ACU were just two points less than the ENMU single game record of 37, set by Robin Bradley against Schreiner in 1997-98.

Hickman led the 2000-01 Zias with 439 points and averaged 6.6 rebounds per game. She ranked 5th in the LSC in scoring (17.6), was 2nd in the conference in 3-point percentage (.417) and was 4th in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.3).

Hickman averaged double-digit scoring in each of her final three seasons at ENMU. She also shot 45.8% from the floor during her career, including 38.8% from 3-point range. She converted 79.2% at the free throw line, including 82.9% in 1997-98 when she ranked 6th in NCAA Division II. She concluded her four seasons at ENMU with 497 career rebounds.

She was a Verizon Academic All-District selection in 2000-01, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She was named to the LSC South All- Academic Team this past season, and qualified for the LSC South Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 1998-99 and 1999-00. She has been on the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll all 7 semesters.

James StewartStewart played three seasons at Eastern New Mexico after transferring from New Mexico Military Institute. He helped the ENMU football team win back-to-back LSC South titles the past two seasons.

During his three years with the Greyhounds, ENMU earned a combined record of 22-10. He played in 31 of 32 games the past three seasons, and completed his career with 106 tackles. He registered 22 tackles for losses and 10 quarterback sacks. In 1999, he started 10 of 11 games, finished the year with 48 tackles, made 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and earned 5 quarterback sacks.

This past season, he started 9 games and made 42 tackles, including 11 tackles for losses and 5 quarterback sacks. He was also a team captain. Stewart scored in all three games against Tarleton State. He scored once when TSU fumbled a punt, once when ENMU blocked a punt, and once on an interception return. Last fall, he not only scored on an interception, but also blocked a punt, both in the final 4 minutes, helping ENMU win 34-27.

He was named First Team All-LSC South in 2000 and was named Second Team All-LSC South in 1999. He was named LSC South Player-of-the-Week twice during his career, and was named National Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette for his efforts against Tarleton State last fall.

He was selected by CoSIDA for GTE Academic All-District honors in 1999, and was named to the LSC South Commissioner’s Honor Roll the same season. He qualified for the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll three semesters.
