MOHLER AND REMPP HIT HOMERS, AS ENMU
DOWNS ST. MARY’S, 8-1, AT NCAA REGIONAL
PUEBLO, CO — Junior third baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) hit a 3-run homer and senior catcher Sarah Rempp (Marshalltown, IA/Greeley Central H.S.) blasted a 2-run homer, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated St. Mary’s University, 8-1, in the winner’s bracket final of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional, May 12 in Pueblo, Colo.

With the win, ENMU advanced to the championship game with an overall record of 36-12-1. St. Mary’s dropped into the loser’s bracket at 39-17 on the season. Mohler’s homer began a 5-run third inning for the Zias, who broke open a 0-0 game with 6 hits during the stanza.

Alison Montbriand (Jr., 2B, Austin, TX/Hill College) walked, and Kim Paschall (Sr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) followed with a bunt single, to put runners at first and second to start the inning. The lengthy blast from Mohler, her second of the tournament and the 29th of her career, came next, as ENMU took a 3-0 lead. Suzy Seitzinger (Sr., OF, Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) added an RBI single and Dawn Murray (So., 1B/P, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly, to complete ENMU’s scoring in the inning.

Eastern added another run in the top of the fifth. Jessica Rowley (Jr., SS, Dallas, OR/ Clackamas C.C.) reached on a fielding error to start the stanza, then stole second base. She scored one out later on a single by Seitzinger.

The Lady Rattlers scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth. Nadia Muraira walked with one out. She later scored on a two-out triple to right center by Elizabeth Card. Natalie Hill lined out to Mohler at third base to end the stanza.

ENMU capped the victory with Rempp’s two-run homer in the sixth. Maegan Rhoten (Fr., OF/1B/P, Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.), who reached first on a fielder’s choice, also scored on the play. It was Rempp’s 7th homer of the season, giving her 19 homers in her four-year ENMU career.

Jennifer Harrer (Sr., RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) struck out 6 batters and allowed 5 hits and 1 walks in recording her second victory of the day. In ENMU’s first round game against Mesa State, she threw a complete game 1-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

Harrer, now 22-6 on the season, has struck out an ENMU record 198 batters this year. She also ranks first on ENMU’s all-time listh with 415 career strikeouts. Kristy Marley pitched the first three innings for St. Mary’s, and gave up 7 hits and 5 runs. She fell to 21-7 with the loss. Chryssa Delgado gave up ENMU’s final three runs.

The Zias will play in the South Central Regional championship at 2:00 p.m. (MDT) on Saturday, May 12, against the winner of the loser’s bracket game between St. Mary’s and Mesa State.

If the Zias lose at 2:00 p.m., another championship game will follow at 5:00 p.m. The South Central Regional champion will advance to the 8-team NCAA Division II National Finals, May 17-21 in Salem, Va.
