JOEL SIMPSON SIGNS LETTER-OF-INTENT TO PLAY BASKETBALL AT EASTERN NEW MEXICO
Joel SimpsonPORTALES, NM — Joel Simpson, a 6’5” 220-pound forward from Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play men’s basketball at Eastern New Mexico University. Simpson, who previously attended Southwestern High School in Detroit, Mich., will join ENMU Head Coach Shawn Scanlan and the Greyhounds for the 2001-02 season.

Simpson averaged 6.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game at Kilgore College this past season. His rebounding total tied for 6th in the Texas Eastern Conference. Simpson played in 25 games, and connected on 58.5% of his field goals attempts (67 of 114). He grabbed 236 rebounds, earned 21 assists and recorded 21 steals.

Prior to attending Kilgore, Simpson was a high school standout. He was named First Team All-City in Detroit after averaging 18 points per game as a senior at Southwestern H.S.

“Joel comes to us from a very good junior college program and one that plays in a high level junior college conference,” Scanlan said. “He helps to fill a void in the interior of our current team, and he is a player who can give us credibility on defense and on the boards.”

“Joel brought great intensity to every game he played in,” said Kilgore Head Coach Scott Schumacher. “He will do whatever he has to do to win.”

Scanlan is heading into his second season as head coach at Eastern New Mexico University. The Greyhounds compete in the Lone Star Conference South Division and NCAA Division II.
