DeHOYOS, McMANN, AND ZIPSER NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH
ENMU Places Brown, Hostetler, Jones on 2nd Team
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University baseball players Gabe DeHoyos (Jr., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.), Jeff Zipser (Sr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) and Dallas McMann (So., C, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) have been named First Team All-Lone Star Conference South Division for the 2001 season, as selected by the LSC South head coaches. Overall, 17 players were named First Team All-LSC South.

The Greyhounds also placed three players on the All-LSC South Second Team. Eastern’s Second Team selections were senior first baseman Matt Brown (Napa, CA/Diablo Valley College), junior outfielder Andy Hostetler (Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) and utility player David Jones (OF/SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College). ENMU finished the 2001 season with a 25-28 overall record, including 10-14 in the LSC South (4th place). The Greyhounds played in 18 games decided by one run or in extra innings.

FIRST TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH
Gabe DeHoyosDeHoyos led the Greyhounds with a 3.72 earned run average and a 6-4 record. He threw two complete-game shutouts and achieved 2 saves pitching in relief. He tied an ENMU record with 83 strikeouts, and limited opponents to a .224 batting average. He topped the Greyhound pitching staff with 67 2/3 innings pitched.

In two seasons at ENMU, DeHoyos has produced a 12-6 overall record with 5 saves. He has struck out 148 batters in 128 1/3 innings pitched, and has recorded a 3.86 career ERA. He as appeared in 32 games, including 20 starts. DeHoyos has thrown 11 complete games, while earning 4 career shutouts.

He also was named First Team All-LSC South last season. He has been chosen LSC South Pitcher-of-the-Week four times, including twice during the 2001 season (Mar. 5, Apr. 2).

Jeff ZipserZipser had an outstanding season for ENMU. He ranked first on the team with a .379 batting average and placed third in RBIs with 34 and runs scored with 42.

He hit 12 doubles, 2 triples and 7 home runs. He led the team with 67 hits, 177 at bats and 104 total bases.

His two-year career totals at ENMU include a .347 batting average, 99 hits, 64 runs and 8 homers. He has recorded 54 RBIs and has achieved a .509 slugging percentage.

Zipser played in 93 of Eastern’s 100 games, including 88 starts.

Dallas McMannMcMann hit .362 for the season, with 29 runs and a team-high 41 RBIs. He played in 48 games, including 44 starts at catcher or designated hitter. He led the Hounds with 14 doubles, and also blasted 3 triples and 5 homers. He made 196 putouts, 27 assists, and just 6 errors on defense to earn a .974 fielding percentage.

McMann has played in 93 games the past two seasons. He has a career batting average of .350 to go with 68 career runs and 72 career RBIs. He has recorded 40 extra-base hits, with 25 doubles, 6 triples, 9 home runs.

SECOND TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH
Matt BrownBrown played in 40 games this season, including 33 starts. He played first base and catcher, and achieved a .982 fielding percentage with 193 putouts, 24 assists and 4 errors. He earned a .330 batting average, scored 21 runs and recorded 12 RBIs. He was an important player for the Greyhounds in 2000 and 2001.

In his two seasons at ENMU, he achieved a .323 career batting average, scored 32 runs and drove in 25 runs. He also finished his career with a .986 overall fielding percentage, with 314 putouts, 32 assists and just 5 errors in 72 games played.

Andy HostetlerHostetler overcame an early-season slump to finish 2001 with .341 batting average. He played in 52 of 53 games, including 49 starts. He was second on the team with 44 runs scored and placed fourth with 33 RBIs. He led all Greyhounds with 16 stolen bases (20 attempts). He hit 7 doubles, 4 triples and 2 home runs.

He was named First Team All-LSC South during the 2000 season, when he hit .391 and led the Hounds with 68 hits, 174 at bats, 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases.

In three years at ENMU, he has earned a .346 career batting average, with 93 runs scored, 73 RBIs, 23 doubles, 10 triples and 4 home runs. He has played in 131 games and has made 113 starts.

David JonesJones gave the Greyhounds solid performances in center field and at shortstop this season. He hit .306 at the plate, scored a team-high 47 runs and drove in 23 runs. He was successful on 11 of 14 stolen bases.

He played in all but one of ENMU’s 53 games and led the Hounds with 20 walks for the second consecutive season. He also was named Second Team All-LSC South as a utility player in 2000, when he led the LSC with 7 triples, setting an ENMU single season record. He also led Eastern with 49 runs, 23 extra-base hits last year.

In three seasons, Jones has scored 100 runs, recorded 57 RBIs, and stolen 16 bases on 24 attempts. He owns a .300 career batting average and a .960 career fielding percentage with 207 assists. He has hit 15 doubles, 9 triples and 13 homers in 107 games played at ENMU.
