MAGUIRE NAMED INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY
Will Continue to Coach Zia Volleyball Team
PORTALES, NM — Dr. Everett Frost, president of Eastern New Mexico University, announced today that Mike Maguire has been named interim athletic director at ENMU for the 2001-02 academic year. Maguire, currently in his 14th season on the ENMU coaching staff, will remain head coach of the Zia volleyball team.

“We greatly appreciate Mike’s willingness to serve as interim athletic director while sustaining his coaching responsibilities,” said Dr. Frost. “The interim appointment will allow the new president (expected to begin Aug. 1) to make his or her own decision about the athletic director position.

“I continue to be impressed that over the last decade, Eastern’s coaches, student athletes and athletic staff have made Eastern the overall winningest program in New Mexico,” Dr. Frost said. “We expect to continue having great success under Mike’s leadership.”

Maguire, 42, has achieved a 295-173 record (.630) at Eastern. His career record, including one season as head coach at Chadron State College (Neb.), is 310-188 (.622). At ENMU, he has averaged more than 20 wins per season and has guided the Zias to 12 consecutive winning records.

He led ENMU to the LSC regular season volleyball title in 1991 and to regular season and tournament titles in 1993. The 1998, 1999 and 2000 teams reached the semifinals of the LSC Tournament. He was named LSC Coach-of-the-Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995, and was chosen LSC South Coach-of-the-Year in 1999. The Zias earned the best record in school history in 1993, finishing 33-6 overall.

“It’s a great opportunity, and I’m honored that Dr. Frost considered me for the interim position,” Maguire said. “We have a great athletic staff in place. I’ve been here 14 years, and I’ve seen three athletic directors. I hope to use a little of everything I’ve seen. I also hope to guide this program to a level of prominence within NCAA Division II athletics.”

Maguire confidently faces the challenges of being coach and interim athletic director at the same time.

“I know I’ll just have to be ultra-organized,” he said. “It will certainly be a difficult task, but I welcome the challenge. I am fortunate to have an outstanding assistant coach in Sia Poyer, who I will rely upon heavily. Being accessible to students, coaches and the community, while also coaching, will be a time-consuming job, but that’s also what makes the opportunity so exciting.

“It’s (athletic director) something I’ve considered for some time now,” he continued. “I intend to go into it full force and do the best job I can. My familiarity with the staff should make for a smooth transition.”

He looks forward to working with Eastern’s administration, as well as other on-campus constituencies and off-campus organizations. He also hopes to continue the Athletic Department’s positive relationship with the Bench Club booster group.

“I hope our fans and sponsors will continue to support us and help us reach the next level,” he said. “I would also like to wish Rosie Stallman the best of luck in her new position with the NCAA.”

Maguire and his wife, Trish, live in Portales. Trish is an instructor in the ENMU College of Business. The Maguires are active in the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and other community activities. Maguire will begin his additional duties on June 9, 2001.
