ZIAS OPEN LSC TOURNAMENT WITH 1-0 WIN OVER NORTHEASTERN STATE
Jennifer Harrer Throws 1-Hit Shutout
IRVING, TX — Senior pitcher Jennifer Harrer (RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw a one-hitter, and Rachel Mohler (Jr., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) drove in Kim Paschall (Sr., CF, Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) with the game’s only run, as Eastern New Mexico defeated Northeastern State, 1-0, in the second round of the 2001 Lone Star Conference Softball Tournament, Apr. 27 at Southwest Park.

ENMU improved to 33-10-1. The Zias, who won the LSC South title with a 12-2 record and received a first round bye in the tournament, will take on North Division champion Southeastern Oklahoma in the winner’s bracket final on Saturday, Apr. 28, at 9:00 a.m. (MDT). Northeastern State, a 6-5 winner over Abilene Christian in the opening round, dropped to 27-15-1 and fell into the loser’s bracket.

Harrer, 19-5, prevented the Lady Reds from creating any offensive momentum. She struck out 3 batters and allowed just 2 walks. NSU’s only hit was a single by April Humphreys in the fifth inning that landed in shallow right field. The hit fell between three players: Paschall, who charged in from center field, plus right fielder Suzy Seitzinger (Sr., Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) and second baseman Alison Montbriand (Jr., Austin, TX/Hill College).

In addition to the hit and two walks, the Lady Reds also benefited from one ENMU error. Even so, Northeastern State never got a runner past second base. NSU pitcher Stephanie Lee fell to 7-6, but gave up just 3 hits, and recorded 4 strikeouts. She allowed one walk and the Lady Reds committed two errors. An infield error with one out in the fourth inning allowed Jessica Rowley (Jr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) to reach base and sent Mohler from first to third.

The ENMU threat ended when NSU catcher Kristi Bell hauled in a pop-up bunt, then doubled off Rowley at first base. Eastern tallied the game’s only run with in the sixth inning.

Paschall walked with one out to start the rally. With two outs, she stole second base. Mohler, who went 2 for 3 and was the only player with more than one hit, drove in Paschall with a double to left field. Humphreys kept NSU’s hopes alive when she walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh, then gave way to pinch-runner Shellie Shaffer.

The next batter, Casey Neely, hit a line drive toward Mohler, who caught the ball, then threw to first for a game-ending double play. Shaffer, who left first when Neely hit the ball, was unable to re-tag.
