MESA STATE DEFEATS ENMU, 72-43
GUNNISON, CO — Mesa State College placed four players in double figures, as the Mavericks defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 72-43, in the second round of the Western State College Classic, Nov. 17 in Gunnison, Colo.MSC improved to 2-0 with the win, while ENMU fell to 0-2 on the season.

Kelli O’Dwyer led all players with 16 points for MSC, as she connected on 6 of 7 field goals. Natalie Rogers added 11 points for the Mavericks, while Camille Kesler and Erin Packer each contributed 10 points. Mesa State shot 50.0% for the game (23 of 46), while limiting the Zias to just 23.5% (16 of 68), including 14.7% in the second half (5 of 34).

Kesler achieved a double-double by also grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Rogers hauled down 9 boards, helping Mesa State claim a decisive 52-33 rebounding edge. MSC also received 8 rebounds from Packer and 6 rebounds from Lindsay Sundloff.

The Mavericks gained a sizable chunk of their lead at the free throw line, as they converted 22 of 29 charity shots. Eastern made 9 of 15 free throw attempts. The Zias were called for 23 fouls, compared to 13 by Mesa State. Just one player reached double figures for ENMU.

Jill Stout (So., G, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.) scored 12 points, provided 4 assists and earned 4 steals. Monica Trimble (Jr., Post, Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro H.S.), Tia Doss (Fr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland H.S.) and Laci Lee (Fr., G, Portales, NM/Portales H.S.) each registered 6 points for the Zias.

Doss, Lee and freshman post Loren Scarlett (Throckmorton, TX/Throckmorton H.S.) led the Zias with 5 rebound apiece. Lee also earned 3 assists and 2 steals for ENMU. The Zias forced 25 turnovers by Mesa State, while losing the ball 17 times on offense.

A total of seven ENMU players recorded at least one steal, as the Zias totaled 13 steals overall. Even so, the Zias could not overcome their difficulty shooting, as Mesa State built a 39-29 halftime lead, then extended its advantage over the final 20 minutes.

Eastern New Mexico is off for more than a week before the Zias play their home opener on Monday, Nov. 26 against New Mexico Highlands University. Game time at Greyhound Arena is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST). The ENMU men’s basketball team will play its home opener the same night against NMHU, with the action set for 8:00 p.m. (MST).
