GREYHOUNDS TO PLAY FULL INTRASQUAD GAME TO BENEFIT COACHES VS. CANCER
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team will play a regulation length intrasquad scrimmage game on Wednesday, Nov. 14, to raise money for Coaches vs. Cancer and to prepare the Greyhounds for the 2001-02 season.

Game time at Greyhound Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (MST). No admission will be charged, and the event is open to the public. The Greyhounds request that individuals attending the game donate at least $2.00 to Coaches vs. Cancer, a charitable organization sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Head Coach Shawn Scanlan and Assistant Coach Doug Davalos will split the Greyhounds into two teams for the intrasquad game. The teams will play two 20-minute halves, with college referees officiating the action.

Eastern has three returning starters, including Rudy Charles, who led ENMU with 14.9 points per game and was chosen LSC South Freshman-of-the-Year. Charles provided Eastern with a team-high 88 assists from his point guard position. He also converted 32 of 79 three-point shots (40.5%) and was 91 of 112 (81.3%) at the free throw line.

Kevin Iverson, a senior guard, also returns, along with Garland Coleman, a sophomore guard/ forward. Iverson averaged 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He shot 52.8% from the field (122 of 231) and ranked 2nd on the team with 33 steals.Coleman connected on 51.0% of his shots (102 of 200) and led the Hounds with 35 steals. He averaged 9.8 points and 5.2 boards per game.

ENMU also has 10 players who will be competing for the Greyhounds for the first time this season. Jonathan Cooper, a transfer from Ventura College (Calif.), who sat out the 2000-01 season at Eastern, is expected to be an offensive force.

Jon Belt, who transferred as a student from Oklahoma State University in January, but sat out the spring semester, will provide solid play at both ends of the floor. Belt previously played basketball at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

The list of newcomers also features six junior college transfers. They are guards Randy Johnson (McLennan C.C.) and Rashad Sullivan (Rose State College), and forwards Joel Simpson (Kilgore College), Vincent Richardson (Navarro College), Cedric Palmer (McLennan C.C.) and Jamaal Hunnicutt (Hill J.C.).

The roster includes sophomore guard Carlton Lewis, plus freshman guards Keenan Hooker (Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) and Irshaun Pinckney (Clovis, NM/Clovis H.S.). Tim Charles (Middletown, NY/Pine Bush H.S.), also a freshman guard, will redshirt this season, but will play in the intrasquad scrimmage game.

Eastern opens the regular season on Monday, Nov. 19, at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. against Western New Mexico University at 5:00 p.m. (MST). The game will be played immediately prior the University of New Mexico’s game with Texas Southern University. ENMU plays its first home game on Monday, Nov. 26, at 8:00 p.m. (MST) against New Mexico Highlands University.
