GREYHOUND BASKETBALL COMPLETES BOOT CAMP
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University basketball team completed “Boot Camp 2001,” a rigorous eight-day exercise, that ran from Sept. 24-27 and Oct. 1-4 each morning at 6:00 a.m. in Greyhound Arena.

The early morning sessions were also coupled with some afternoon workouts for 10 total sessions of mental and physical conditioning. Four exercises were conducted in which each member of the team was required to meet the minimum standards set by the Greyhound coaching staff before moving on to the next exercise.

According Head Coach Shawn Scanlan, some of the players ran the exercises more than once in order to meet the minimum standards. In the 12-minute run, the players were required to complete a minimum of 7 laps around the track within the twelve minute time period.

Rudy Charles (So., Guard, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) and Kevin Iverson (Sr., Guard, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.) led the Greyhounds with 7.75 laps followed by juniors Randy Johnson (Guard, Italy, TX/McLennan C.C.) and Rashad Sullivan (Guard, Enid, OK/Rose State J.C.) with 7.5 laps and Jon Belt (Forward, Broken Arrow,OK/ Northeastern OK A&M) with 7.25 laps completed.

The Pacer Test consisted of running 20-meter sprints continuously on the basketball court. With the required standard of 83 laps, Carlton Lewis (So., Guard, Muleshoe, TX/Muleshoe H.S.) set the pace with 125 laps closely followed by Iverson’s 121 laps and Jon Cooper (Jr., Guard, Richton Park, IL/Chaffey College) with 113 laps.

For the 12-minute stair test, the players were tested on how many trips they could complete through the bottom row of stairs in the Greyhound Arena. Leading the way was Sullivan with 8.4 trips, Charles in 8.3, and Iverson with 7.7 trips. Irshaun Pinckney (Fr., Guard, Clovis, NM/ Clovis H.S.), Cooper and Johnson finished with 7.6 trips. The minimum standard was 7 trips.

On the final day, the players ran “30 horses”, which were wind sprints. Coach Scanlan said the exercise was “aimed to see if the team could find a way of getting through (the various tests) with no individual failing.”

At the conclusion of the camp, each player had successfully completed all four exercises. “I was pleased with the results and felt the team progressed through each exercise, getting better after each one,” Coach Scanlan said. “And with the basketball season officially starting Monday, the boot camp has left me and the team with a positive and confident feeling going into Oct. 15.”
