TARLETON STATE OFFENSE LEADS TEXANS TO
55-14 VICTORY OVER GREYHOUNDS
STEPHENVILLE, TX — The Tarleton State University offense amassed 549 yards and scored 7 touchdowns, as the Texans won their Homecoming game, 55-14, over the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds, in a Lone Star Conference game, Oct. 13. TSU improved to 5-2 on the season and to 2-1 in the LSC South.

ENMU fell to 4-3, 0-3 in the LSC South. Tarleton State quarterback Steve Kelly threw for 2 touchdowns, ran for 3 TDs and caught a 10-yard halfback-option pass for another touchdown. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 341 yards. He has thrown for 1,799 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

Overall, the TSU offense was 21 of 30 passing for 359 yards. Six different players caught at least two passes for the Texans. TSU also gained 190 rushing yards on 42 carries, led by Olan Coleman, who carried the ball 9 times for 85 yards, including a 56-yard TD run. The teams exchanged early touchdowns, with Tarleton State striking first on a 22-yard pass from Kelly to Latrell Davis.

TSU’s drive covered 69 yards in 4 plays. Eastern countered with a 10-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Antoine Lacy (Sr., RB, Richmond, CA/Contra Costa College). The teams were tied 7-7 with 8:03 left in the first quarter. TSU scored the next 48 points, and led 55-7 with 6:09 left in the third quarter when Coleman scored on his lengthy touchdown run.

ENMU completed the scoring on a 2-yard run by Lacy with 1:05 remaining in the third period. In addition to his 22-yard TD pass to Davis, Kelly also scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half. His first TD run covered 1 yard, and completed a 7-play, 80-yard drive for a 14-7 lead. He also scored on a 2-yard run at the end of an 11-play, 66-yard drive that gave TSU a 34-7 lead with 29 seconds to go in the first half.

The Texans also scored first-half points on field goals of 24 yards and 34 yards by J.W. Boren and on Kelly’s pass reception from running back Chavis McCollister. Tarleton State extended its lead by two touchdowns in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Brandon Young set up the first score when he intercepted a pass by James Williams (Sr., QB, Earth, TX/Springlake-Earth H.S.) at the ENMU 39-yard line on the fourth play of the third quarter. Three plays later, Kelly connected with Brian Lucas on a 34-yard TD pass.

The Texans blocked a punt on ENMU’s next possession, and Jon Basham recovered for Tarleton State at the Eastern 11-yard line. TSU took over at the 6-yard line, following a 5-yard penalty on ENMU for illegally kicking the ball on the ground after the punt was blocked. Kelly scored two plays later on a 5-yard run. Late in the third quarter, the Greyhounds drove from their own 18-yard line to the TSU 9-yard line. A substitution infraction prior to 1st-and-goal moved the ball to the 14-yard line.

The Greyhounds advanced the ball back to the original line of scrimmage over the next three plays, but Williams’ pass for Cale Sanders (Jr., WR, Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) fell incomplete on fourth down. Tarleton State turned the ball over on its first play after stopping the Hounds. Coleman lost the ball on a running play, and Jose Gutierrez (Jr., DT, Clovis, NM/Clovis H.S.) recovered for ENMU. Lacy rushed for 5 yards on first down, then scored from the 2-yard line on the second pl

ay. It was his 7th TD of the year and his 15th rushing touchdown in two seasons at ENMU. The Greyhounds finished the game with 288 yards, including 162 yards on 49 carries. Dennis Beard (Sr., RB, Albuquerque, NM/N.M. Mil. Inst.) topped the ENMU rushing chart with 67 yards on 13 carries. Lacy produced 49 yards on 15 carries, and Williams gained 30 yards on 4 carries.

Heath Ridenour (Jr., QB, Lovington, NM/Lovington H.S.) started the game at quarterback for Eastern, and completed 4 of 8 passes for 42 yards. He was sacked 3 times. Williams was 2 of 7 passing for 84 yards, with 2 interceptions. Sanders caught 4 passes for 102 yards, giving him at least 4 catches in all 7 games this season.

Josh Quebe (Fr., WR, Lockney, TX/Lockney H.S.) hauled in 2 catches for 24 yards. Alester Givens led TSU with 4 receptions. Kyle Masters caught 3 passes for a team-high 58 yards for the Texans. Davis and K.J. Kennard also caught 3 passes each. Boren was 2 for 2 on field goals and 7 for 7 on extra points for Tarleton State. Mike Trimble (Sr., PK/P, Houston, TX/Adams State College) kicked both extra points for the Greyhounds.

Jonathon Solis (Jr., FS, Roswell, NM/N.M. Military Institute) of ENMU led all defensive players with 18 total tackles. He recorded 8 solo tackles and 10 assists, while achieving 2 tackles for losses. Adrian Quigley (Fr., SS, Lubbock, TX/Monterey H.S.) earned 12 tackles for Eastern, and Ty Touchstone (Fr., DB, Lubbock, TX/Monterey H.S.) added 9 tackles for the Hounds.Tarleton State received 11 tackles (5 solo, 6 assists) from safety Kenneth Calhoun.

ENMU returns to Greyhound Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20 for an LSC South game against Texas A&M University-Commerce. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. (MST). Last year, TAMUC edged the Greyhounds, 9-7, on a rain-soaked field in Commerce, Texas.
