INCARNATE WORD DEFEATS ENMU, 3-1 AT WTAMU SOUTHWEST CHALLENGE
CANYON, TX — Keelie Rader earned a match-high 34 kills and hit .510, leading the University of the Incarnate Word to a 3-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico University, Oct. 19 at the West Texas A&M University Southwest Region Challenge. Incarnate Word outlasted the Zias, 30-24, 33-31, 24-30, 30-22, to improve to 12-10 on the season.

ENMU fell to 13-12. Rader’s outstanding offensive performance helped the Crusaders achieve 80 total kills and a .309 team hitting percentage. Her efforts offset a solid match by the Zias, who registered 60 kills and hit .246 as a team.

Christabell Mariner (Jr., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) provided ENMU with 22 kills and finished the match with a .244 hitting percentage. She also recorded 6 digs and was credited with 6 block assists. Jessica Rowley (Sr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) supplied 11 kills, hit .292, and led the Zias with 9 digs. Courtney Wallenborn (Jr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood C.C.) contributed 10 kills and a .346 hitting percentage.

Eastern also received 8 kills, 8 digs and 6 total blocks from Raina Pilon (Jr., MB, Eagan, MN/ Pasco-Hernando C.C.). Sophomore setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) earned 51 assists, led the Zias with 3 service aces, and recorded 8 digs. Rader was joined in double-digit kills by Kathleen Kernwein, who connected for 18 kills and a .455 hitting percentage.

Michaela Settlemeyer added 8 kills and 6 digs, while Jenni Skopal recorded 8 kills and 5 digs. Rader led Incarnate Word with 9 digs, and Julee James dished out 62 assists. ENMU earned 12.0 team total blocks, with 1 block solo and 22 block assists.

The Zias held a significant margin in team blocks, as UIW earned no block solos and just 2 block assists. The teams were nearly even in digs, with ENMU accumulating 40 and the Crusaders earning 39.

The Zias are scheduled to play two matches in the Southwest Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 20. ENMU will take on Midwestern State University at 9:00 a.m. (MDT), before facing St. Mary’s University (Texas) at 1:00 p.m. (MDT). Eastern returns home for a key Lone Star Conference South Division match against West Texas A&M on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (MDT).
