DeHoyos Strikes out 7 in 3 Innings for White Team
PORTALES, NMGabe DeHoyos (Sr., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) struck out seven batters in three innings for the White Team, but the Green Team battled to a 3-2 victory, in the ENMU Homecoming All-Star Baseball Game, Oct. 6 at Greyhound Field.

The Green Team scored single runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings, then held off a rally by the White Team in the bottom of the ninth, to record the win. Each pitcher was limited to three innings on the mound, but DeHoyos made the most of his limited appearance. He struck out the first three batters of the game, then added one strikeout in the second inning and three more strikeouts in the third. He allowed just two base runners, on one walk in the second inning and another base on balls in the third stanza.

The Green Team pushed across the game’s first run in the top of the fourth. With one out, Ryan Dickson (Sr., 1B, Trail, BC/Big Bend C.C.) walked. Matt Sulli (Sr., CF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) grounded out, then Mark Wallace (Fr., SS/2B, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) drove in Dickson with a double.

Josh Swain (Jr., RF, Lubbock, TX/Frank Phillips College) was hit by a pitch, but the Green Team left two runners on base when pitcher Joshua Kuchta (Fr., RHP, Clovis, NM/Clovis H.S.) forced Rusty Maddux (Jr., LF, Wolfforth, TX/Howard College) into an infield grounder.Swain was thrown out at second on the play.

Mike Luther (So., C, Thornton, CO/Lamar J.C.) added an insurance run for the Green Team in the eighth inning. He walked, then scored when Dickson hit into an error at shortstop. Sulli flew out to center field to end the inning. Wallace singled to start the ninth inning. He stole second base, and scored on a single by Swain.

A double play and a fly ball to second base allowed the White Team to escape the stanza, but the Green Team held a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Andy Hostetler (Sr., CF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) and Chris Hill (Jr., 2B, Boise, ID/Scottsdale C.C.) walked, and Dallas McMann (Jr., C, Amarillo, TX/ Randall H.S.) reached base on an error by the right fielder.

Hostetler scored on a wild pitch, and Hill crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Franco Barrero (Jr., 1B, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.). McMann, representing the tying run, was left at third base when Luz Leal, Jr. grounded out to first and Boe Parr struck out to end the game. Jerry Macias (Jr., RHP, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) recorded the win and Shem Peachey (Fr., RHP, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) earned the save. Peachey faced just three batters in the ninth, but registered the final three outs of the game.

Wallace led the Green Team with 2 hits in 4 at bats. His double in the fourth was the game’s only extra-base hit. Swain was 1 for 2, but reached first base in three of four trips to the plate. Hostetler was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored for the White Team.

McMann earned the White Team’s only other hit, a single in the fourth inning. The game featured strong pitching, with seven pitchers combining to limit the two teams to a combined six hits. The White Team struck out 10 batters, and the Green Team struck out 6 batters.

ENMU finished the 2001 season with a 25-28 overall record and a 10-14 mark in the Lone Star Conference South Division. The Greyhounds played in 18 games decided by one run or in extra innings.
