EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S TENNIS RESULTS
Abilene Christian University Tournament Saturday, Sept. 15 (Final Day of 2 Days) ENMU’s Results Only

JANELLE SANCHEZ OF ENMU WINS #3 SINGLES TITLE

Janelle Sanchez, a medical redshirt freshman from Albuquerque, N.M. (Cibola H.S.), won the #3 singles title at the Abilene Christian University Tournament, which concluded on Saturday, Sept. 15. Sanchez, competing in her first tournament since undergoing shoulder surgery this past year, won all three of her matches, including a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Israel of Abilene Christian in the finals.

Other top finishers for ENMU were Layla Turner, 3rd at #1 singles; Bethanie Nix, 5th at #1 singles; Lisa Weinman, 4th at #2 singles; Turner and Nix, tied for 5th at #1 doubles; Weinman and Sarah Pennington, tied for 5th at #1 doubles; Sarah Salazar and Sanchez, 2nd at #2 doubles.

The tournament featured four singles flights and three doubles flights. Eastern did not enter any players at #4 singles or at #3 doubles. No team scores were recorded during the tournament. NOTE: Matches tied after two sets were completed with a tie-breaker to 10 points (win by 2) instead of playing a third set.

#1 Singles Layla Turner (Sr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) lost to Johnson (Abilene Christian), 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 10-6, in the semifinals. Turner defeated Wildner (Abilene Christian), 5-7, 6-2, 10-4, in the 3rd place match.

Bethanie Nix (So., Big Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) defeated Thompson (Hardin-Simmons), 6-7, 6-0, 10-7, to advance to the 5th place match. Nix defeated Chumley (Abilene Christian), 5-7, 6-3, 10-3, in the 5th place match. Layla Turner - 3rd place; Bethanie Nix - 5th place.

#2 Singles Lisa Weinman (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) lost to Beesley (Abilene Christian), 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals. Weinman lost to Taylor (Abilene Christian), 6-0, 6-1, in the 3rd place match.

Sarah Pennington (Sr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) lost to DeBlonk (Cameron), with DeBlonk advancing to the 5th place match. Pennington’s score with DeBlonk was not available. Lisa Weinman - 4th place; Sarah Pennington - 7th place tie.

#3 Singles Janelle Sanchez (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.) defeated Canada (Abilene Christian), 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in the semifinals. Sanchez defeated Israel (Abilene Christian), 7-5, 6-2, in the finals.

Sarah Salazar (Jr., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) - results from Saturday are not available. Janelle Sanchez - 1st place; Sarah Salazar - finish not available.

#2 Doubles Sarah Salazar and Janelle Sanchez (ENMU) lost to Taylor and Beesley (Abilene Christian), 8-3, in the championship match. Sarah Salazar and Janelle Sanchez - 2nd place.

Eastern New Mexico University is in action again from Friday, Oct. 5 through Sun., Oct. 7 at the ITA/Rolex Regional Tournament in Greeley, Colo. The University of Northern Colorado is hosting the tournament.
