LARRY VARNADO NAMED
LSC SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
Larry VarnadoPORTALES, NMLarry Varnado, a 5’10”, 245-pound senior linebacker at Eastern New Mexico University, has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in Eastern’s 36-33 win at Midwestern State University on Saturday, Sept. 15. Varnado tied for the team lead in tackles against MSU, as the Greyhounds improved to 3-0 on the season (1-0 overall LSC).

Varnado achieved 12 total tackles on 9 unassisted stops and 3 assists. Five of his tackles were for losses totaling 26 yards, including 1 sack for a 7-yard loss. He also made a tackle at the 1-yard line on 2nd-and-goal at the two, in Eastern’s goal line stand in the third quarter.

After keeping MSU out of the end zone, the Greyhounds drove 99 yard on 11 plays to take a 29-19 lead. Eastern rallied from an early 13-0 deficit in the win over Midwestern State. The Hounds trailed 19-14 at the half, but claimed a 36-19 lead before MSU scored the two touchdowns to cut the final margin to three points.

The victory helped ENMU move up to #20 in this week’s NCAA Division II Poll. The Greyhounds were ranked #22 last week.

ENMU plays the second game in a three-game road trip when the Hounds take on the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla., on Saturday, Sept. 22. The LSC crossover game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. (MST).
