ENMU MEN DEFEAT WEST TEXAS A&M; WOMEN RUN AGAINST WTAMU, OPSU
CANYON, TX — Laurence Chibvongodze (Fr., Harare, Zimbabwe/Prince Edward HS) placed second individually, leading the Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country team to a dual meet victory over West Texas A&M University, Apr. 30 in Canyon, Texas. ENMU finished with a team score of 26, while WTAMU scored 29.

Chibvongodze completed the 4-mile course in 23:30. He reached the finish line 16 seconds behind the individual winner, Justin Hesse of West Texas A&M. Hesse’s time was 23:14. Third place went to Kyle Winter of WTAMU, whose time was 23:47.

In the women’s division, ENMU raced against WTAMU and Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Eastern and West Texas A&M did not field complete teams, so OPSU won the meet by default.

Five other runners posted times for the Greyhounds. Jonathan Gilbert (Jr., Saco, ME/U. of Massachusetts) placed 4th in 24:21. Robert Fear (Fr., Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) took 5th in 24:38. Ryan Cook (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva HS) finished 7th in 26:00. Michael Hendrix clocked in at 26:22 for 8th place, and Joe Scholer (Jr.) concluded the race in 33:37 for 11th place.

Eastern was represented by three runners in the women’s race. Debbie Hernandez (So., Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) led the Zias with a 5th place finish in 23:22 for the 3-mile course. Theresa Guerrin (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Moon Valley HS) was 6th with a time of 23:24. Jana Villegas (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad HS) was 11th in 26:05.

The Greyhounds and the Zias will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 at Abilene Christian University. Race time for the ACU Classic is set for 6:00 p.m.(MST).
