ZIAS RALLY PAST ANGELO STATE IN FIVE GAMES Mariner Records 26 Kills, 9 Digs and 8 Blocks
SAN ANGELO, TX Christabell Mariner (Jr., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) earned a match-high 26 kills, leading Eastern New Mexico University through a tough five-game match against the host Angelo State University Rambelles for a 30-26, 31-33, 21-30, 30-22, 15-12 road victory on Sept. 29.

The Zias, who lost at Abilene Christian in four games on Sept. 28, completed their first Lone Star Conference road trip of the season while improving to 10-8 overall, 3-1 in the LSC South. Angelo State dropped to 3-12, 1-3 in the LSC South.

Mariner finished the match with a .380 hitting percentage to go with her 26 kills. She also provided the Zias with 9 digs, 8 block assists and 1 serving ace, as Eastern came back from 2-1 deficit in games to win the match. Mariner currently leading the Zias’ season stats with 4.69 kills per game and a .321 hitting percentage.

The Zias also received contributions from Jessica Rowley (Sr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) and Courtney Wallenborn (Jr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood C.C.). Rowley added 16 kills and 9 digs, while increasing her total attacks to a team-leading 541. Wallenborn earned 11 kills and 11 digs. Junior middle blocker Raina Pilon (Eagan, MN/Pasco-Hernando C.C.) provided 7 kills and a .263 hitting percentage to go with 10 digs and 4 blocking assists, while Shannyn DeArman produced 9 kills and 5 block assists.

Margie Goble (So., San Antonio, TX/ Holmes H.S.), last week’s LSC South Setter/Defensive Player-of-the-Week, continued her success, recording 57 assists, 11 digs and 6 kills. Jill Durham and Lee Hillery led the Rambelles by combining for 31 kills, 27 digs, and 12 total blocks. Durham achieved 16 kills, 5 digs and 8 total blocks. Hillery registered 15 kills, 22 digs and 4 total blocks.

Angelo State had five players with double-digit kills, but the Zias held the Rambelles to a team hitting percentage of only .155. ENMU began the afternoon with a 30-26 victory in the first game, but Angelo State edged the Zias, 33-31, in the second game. The Rambelles won the third game, 30-21, to move within one game of winning the match.

The Zias rallied, claiming a 30-22 triumph in the fourth game, before clinching the match with a 15-12 victory in the tie-breaking fifth game. The Zias hit .357 as a team in Game #4, then limited the Rambelles to a .083 hitting percentage in the final game.

Eastern returns to the road on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 for the LSC Crossover Tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas, for a 3-match series against teams from the LSC North Eastern plays Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Cameron University on Friday at 1:00 p.m. (MST) and 7:00 p.m. (MST), respectively. On Saturday, the Zias will take on the University of Central Oklahoma at 2:00 p.m. (MST).
