MARINER RECORDS TRIPLE-DOUBLE AS ZIAS
DEFEAT ADAMS STATE
LAS VEGAS, NM — Junior middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) achieved a triple-double in kills, digs and total blocks, leading Eastern New Mexico University to a 3-1 victory over Adams State, Sept. 3 at New Mexico Highlands University. The win was Eastern’s second over ASC in three days, and improved the Zias to 3-7 overall. The Grizzlies fell to 1-4.

Mariner led all players with 25 kills. She also provided the Zias with 19 digs and 10 total blocks (2 solo, 8 assisted). Her efforts helped ENMU win 30-24, 32-34, 30-19, 30-20. Mariner, who missed three matches earlier this year with an achilles injury, leads the Zias with 98 kills and 32 blocks for the season.

Three others players finished the match with double-digit kills. Raina Pilon (Jr., MB, Eagan, MN/Pasco-Hernando C.C.) registered 13 kills, Jessica Rowley (Sr., OH, Dallas,OR/Clackamas C.C.) added 12 kills, and Shannyn De Arman (Jr., MB, Chandler, AZ/Glendale C.C.) earned 11 kills. Rowley also supplied 12 digs, while Pilon contributed 14 digs and 5 blocks assists.

Courtney Wallenborn (Jr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood C.C.) achieved 8 kills, 18 digs and 8 block assists for the Zias. Margie Goble (So., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) earned 57 assists, and provided 12 digs. Nikki Tilton (Sr., S, Milwaukee, OR/Alabama A&M) added 13 digs.

Adams State’s top player was Elena Goldina, who recorded 24 kills, and led all players with 24 digs. Tanesha Steadhman was credited with 8 kills and 11 digs. Marrissa Sullivan pounded out 8 kills, while Trisha Kofe tallied 46 assists and 13 digs.

ENMU concluded the match with 73 kills and a .273 hitting percentage, while Adams State earned 58 kills and a .119 hitting percentage. The Zias outplayed the Grizzlies at the net, registering 15.0 team total blocks, while ASC managed 9.0 total blocks. Eastern hit .452 in the third game, recording 20 kills, 1 error and 42 total attacks.

The Zias play again on Friday, Sept. 7, in ENMU’s home opener at Greyhound Arena. Match time against Midwestern State University is set for 7:00 p.m. (MST). Eastern will also play at home on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it takes on Western New Mexico University at 10:00 a.m. (MST).

NOTE: ENMU also defeated N.M. Highlands on Sept. 3. Game scores were 25-30, 32-30, 30-22, 30-21. Eastern improved to 4-7. Statistics were not available when this release was written.
