ZIAS DEFEAT MIDWESTERN STATE
FOR FIFTH WIN IN A ROW
Mike Maguire Earns 300th Victory at ENMU
PORTALES, NM — Leading one game to none, but trailing 28-23 in the second game, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team ran off seven consecutive points to win Game #2, 30-28, as the Zias swept Midwestern State University, Sept. 7 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias defeated the Lady Indians, 30-19, 30-28, 30-22, lifting ENMU to 5-7 with its fifth consecutive victory.

MSU dropped to 3-7. Christabell Mariner (Jr., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) led Eastern during the match and finished with 15 kills, 11 digs and 3 total blocks. She earned a .375 hitting percentage, and provided 2 service aces.

The win over Midwestern State gave ENMU Head Coach Mike Maguire his 300th victory with the Zias. Maguire, in his 15th year, improved to 300-180 (.625) at Eastern New Mexico. His career record is 315-195 (.618) during 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Mariner was joined in double-digit kills by Courtney Wallenborn (Jr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood C.C.) and Raina Pilon (Jr., MB, Eagan, MN/Pasco-Hernando C.C.), who registered 10 kills apiece. Pilon added 13 digs, and provided the winning point in the second game with a solo block in the middle.

Eastern led 10-4 and 14-8 in the first game, before expanding its lead to 22-11. MSU never got closer than eight points the remainder of the game, as the Zias took a 30-19 win. In the second game, Midwestern led 4-3, but increased its advantage to 11-5, forcing ENMU to call timeout.

The Zias recovered and cut the deficit to one point at 16-15 and 17-16, but MSU went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-16 lead. After trailing 28-23, ENMU began its game- winning run, which included two kills by freshman Jamie Wise (MB/OH, Abilene, TX/Abilene H.S.), three kill errors and a bad pass by MSU, plus the decisive block by Pilon. The Zias never trailed in the third game, but held slim leads of 11-10 and 15-13.

Eastern led 23-16 after Midwestern State took 4 hits to return the ball on two consecutive rallies. The Lady Indians cut the deficit to 25-22, but never scored again, as ENMU completed the match with a 30-22 triumph.

Jessica Rowley (Sr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) earned 5 of her 6 kills in the third game. She also achieved five digs in the third game, giving her 11 digs for the match. Margie Goble (So., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) added 40 assists, 14 digs and 4 kills for the Zias.

Midwestern State’s top player was Joni Martin, who supplied the Lady Indians with 9 kills and 10 digs. Amanda Carlson contributed 7 kills, while Brandi Robberson added 6 kills and 10 digs. Sydney Haisler earned 24 assists to go with 8 digs. The Zias recorded a .240 hitting percentage, while Midwestern State managed just a .032 hitting percentage. Eastern finished with 52 kills and 65 digs.

The Lady Indians totaled 29 kills and recorded 48 digs. Eastern New Mexico continues its five-match homestand on Saturday, Sept. 8, against Western New Mexico University. Match time at Greyhound Arena is set for 10:00 a.m. (MST).

WNMU defeated ENMU, 30-25, 30-26, 30-27, in the season opener for both teams, Aug. 24 at the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Classic.
