ZIAS DOWN MIDWESTERN STATE, 5-3
In
the rematch at UCO, Midwestern State jumped out to a 2-1 lead by winning
two of the three doubles flights. At #1 doubles, the MSU team of Brooke
Gray and Tiffany Burgess edged Lisa
Weinman (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah
Pennington (Sr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.), 8-6. The #2 doubles match was won by Emilee Black and Sara Butler of MSU by an 8-5 score over Bethanie Nix (So., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) and Janelle Sanchez (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.). Layla Turner (Sr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Jr., Belen, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) won #3 doubles. They defeated Robbie Vittitow and Lacey Wuthrich, 8-4. Turner, ranked #37 in NCAA Division II in singles, led the way to Eastern’s 4-1 edged in singles matches. She easily defeated Gray, 6-2, 6-0, at #1 singles. Nix won #2 singles, defeating Vittitow, 6-0, 6-1, while Sanchez won #4 singles, taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Latisha Karber. Pennington defeated Emilee Black of MSU, 6-3, 6-1.The Indians’ only singles triumph was earned by Sara Butler, who defeated Salazar at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-2. ENMU clinched the team victory before the #3 singles match between Weinman and Burgess was completed. ENMU will play Northwest Missouri State University later today. The Zias were originally scheduled to play NW Missouri at 8:00 a.m. (MST) this morning, but rain forced a postponement of the match.The Zias and the Bearcats will now play at 5:00 p.m. (MST). (#23)
