IMPROVES TO 12-2 WITH 5-1 WIN OVER NW MISSOURI
ENMU had little trouble in recording victories in five flights. Layla Turner (Sr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), Lisa Weinman (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (Sr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) easily recorded singles victories, and the Zias quickly won #2 and #3 doubles. Eastern suffered its only loss of the match at #1 doubles. NW Missouri’s Rosa Tapia and Adriana Hernandez edged Weinman and Pennington, 9-8, after winning the tie-breaker, 9-7. At #2 doubles, Bethanie Nix (So., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) and Janelle Sanchez (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.) defeated Jane Clark and Sara Lipira of NW Missouri, 8-3. Turner and Sarah Salazar (Jr., Belen, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) won #3 doubles, 8-2, over Raven Herner and Nicole Berger. Turner won a battle of nationally-ranked players at #1 singles, after entering the match ranked #37 in NCAA Division II. Tapia, her opponent, was ranked #48 in Division II. Turner took a 6-3 victory in the first set, then completed the straight-set win with a 6-2 triumph.Weinman was victorious at #3 singles. She defeated Jan Pendrak, 6-1, 6-2. Pennington won at #5 singles, as she downed Berger, 6-0, 6-1. The Zias are scheduled to complete the Broncho Invitational with two matches on Saturday, April 13. ENMU will take on Cameron University, tied for #40 in Division II, at 8:00 a.m. (MST) and will play Northeastern State University, ranked #17, at 1:00 p.m. (MST). (#23)
