GREYHOUNDS DEFEAT WAYLAND BAPTIST, 5-2
PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University scored four runs in the third inning and pitchers Trevor Davis (Fr., RHP, Evergreen, CO/Evergreen H.S.), Jerry Macias (Jr., RHP, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) and Gabe DeHoyos (Sr., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) held Wayland Baptist University to seven hits, as ENMU defeated WBU, 5-2, at Greyhound Field on April 2. The Greyhounds upped their record to 15-23, while the Pioneers dropped to 14-26 on the season.

Davis improved his record to 3-2. He threw the first six innings and gave up just two runs (one earned), while striking out two batters and allowing one walk. Macias limited WBU to one hit in two innings of relief, before DeHoyos struck out three batters in the ninth inning to end the game. DeHoyos picked up his first save of the season.

Despite Eastern’s solid pitching, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Grady Sanders singled to left field. Logan Rankin followed with another single, sending Sanders to third. Brad Wuensche also singled, with Sanders scoring on the play. Julio Hinojosa flew out to right field, and Aaron Dunn (So., OF, Carlsbad, NM/N.M. Military Institute) threw out Rankin at third base for an inning-ending double play. The Hounds charged into the lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Matt Sulli (Sr., OF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) started the rally by hitting an infield single, then stealing second base. He advanced to third on a ground out by Mark Wallace (Fr., CF, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) and scored the tying run when Dallas McMann (Jr., DH/C, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) singled to right field.

Franco Barrero (Jr., 1B/DH, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.) drove in McMann with a triple, giving ENMU the lead for good. Chris Hill (Jr., 2B, Boise, ID/Scottsdale C.C.) walked, then a throwing error allowed Xarin Escobedo (Sr., SS, Mexico City, MEX/El Paso C.C.) to reach base and Barrero and Hill to score.

Wayland Baptist cut one run from Eastern’s 4-1 lead when Felix Castillo walked an later scored in the top of the fourth inning. Wuensche’s two-out, infield single allowed Castillo to score. The Pioneers also benefited from an error that helped Castillo reach second base with one out.

The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Wallace led off the inning with a double down the right field line. McMann singled to right center, sending Wallace across the plate for a 5-2 ENMU advantage. A fly ball to center field and a double play ended the stanza.

WBU recorded just two hits in the final five innings. Josh Milner and Wuensche were the only Pioneers with more than one hit. Both players went 2 for 4. McMann led ENMU with 3 hits in 4 at bats. He also scored once and drove in two runs. Wallace was 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Escobedo went 2 for 4 with an RBI. McMann, who has registered at least one hit in 28 of Eastern’s last 30 games, improved his season batting average to a team-leading .444.
