GREYHOUNDS' KYLE DUTTON TAKES THIRD IN CALF ROPING AT HOWARD COLLEGE RODEO
BIG SPRING, TX Kyle Dutton (Sr., Los Lunas, NM/La Mesa H.S.) of Eastern New Mexico University came home with third place in calf roping at the Howard College Rodeo, April 18-20, at the HC Rodeo Arena. Dutton’s combined time after the short go was 20.2 seconds.

Monty Lewis of West Texas A&M University took first place in calf roping with a combined time of 19.1 seconds. James Gililland (Fr., Tularosa, NM/Tularosa H.S.) of ENMU and Trent Cornelius of Howard College placed fifth after the short go in team roping. They had a combined time of 22.6 seconds.

Vernon College took first place for the men with 255 points. Second place honors went to West Texas A&M with 200 points. Odessa College finished third with 170 points, followed by Western Texas College with 150 points. Howard College took fifth place with 115 points, and was closely followed by Mesaland Community College with 102.5 points. ENMU scored 70 points due to the efforts of Dutton and Gililland.

The Hounds tied Tarleton State for seventh place. Frank Phillips College, with 25 points, was the only other team to score. In the men’s division, Trey Hale of Howard College and Kyle Logsdon of Odessa College (6.2-7.2-13.4) tied for first place in team roping with Walt Broyles of College of the Southwest and Paul Gutierrez of Mesalands Community College (7.1-6.3-13.4) with a time of 13.4 seconds. Cal White of Vernon College took first in bull riding with 157 points.

Cimmaron Gerke of Odessa College took first in bareback riding (68-73-141), while Jesse Kirby of Vernon College won saddle bronc riding (68-76--144) and Tony Sauter of Howard College (4.7-4.5--9.2) tied with Monty Eakin of West Texas A&M (4.3-4.9--9.2) for first place in steer wrestling.

As for the Zias, Kristin Gendron (So., Templeton, CA/Templeton H.S.) made it to the short go in barrel racing. She had her best time in the long go at 17.46 seconds, and posted a time of 17.65 seconds in the short go. Tiffani Burton of WTAMU took first place in the event with a combined time of 34.66 seconds (17.48-17.18). Katie Kirkes (Jr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) of ENMU made the short go in goat tying. She posted a total of 21.4 seconds after the short go.The event was won by Jaclyn Hobbs of Vernon College, who completed the short go with 19.1 points.

ENMU scored 10 team points in the women’s division from Kirkes and Gendron. Both were included on the predetermined list of four cowgirls eligible to score points for the Zias. Vernon College won the women’s team title with 160 points. Tarleton State came in second, earning 140 points. Western Texas College took third, finishing right behind Tarleton with 135 points.Weatherford College placed fourth with 60 points. Western Texas College had 30 points to take fifth place, while Mesalands College and Eastern New Mexico tied for sixth. Howard College scored five points.

In women’s competition, Hobb won goat tying (9.3-8.8--19.1) and Tiffani Burton of West Texas A&M took first in barrel racing (17.48-17.18--34.66). Jamie Standifer of Tarleton State won break-away roping with times of 2.7 seconds in the long go and 2.9 seconds in the short go (5.6 seconds overall). The All-Around Cowboy was Jesse Kirby who brought in 120 points for Vernon College. The All-Around Cowgirl was Hobbs, also from Vernon, who scored 120 points.

Eastern’s rodeo teams return to action May 2-4 in Stephenville, Texas, where they will compete at the Tarleton State University Rodeo. The Greyhounds and Zias will participate in the Conference Finals Rodeo in Hobbs, New Mexico, May 23-26.
