ENMU SET FOR ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS WITH THREE CANDIDATES IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEARCH
PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University has announced the selection of three candidates for on-campus interviews in the search for the University’s next head women’s basketball coach. The three candidates who will be interviewed in Portales, N.M., are Dan Buzard (Buh-ZARD), Jeff Carter and William H. Wilson.

Interviews will be conducted between now and the middle of next week.The successful candidate will replace Wayne Moore, who has announced his resignation after 22 seasons, effective at the end of the current semester. It is anticipated that the new coach will begin working at ENMU shortly after a final decision is made.

Carter is scheduled to interview at ENMU on Friday (April 26). He will be available for media interviews between 11:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. (MDT) in Greyhound Arena. Buzard and Wilson will be scheduled for interviews next week. Specific dates have not been confirmed at this time.

Buzard is already an employee in the ENMU Athletic Department. He has served as assistant women’s basketball coach for a total of 13 seasons, and has been a full-time assistant coach since the 1993-94 season. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from ENMU in 1992 and received a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Eastern in 1994. Buzard helped Moore guide 11 teams to records of .500 or better, including nine above the .500 mark. Buzard was an assistant when ENMU achieved its best-ever record, 23-5, in 1992-93. He also helped the Zias qualify for the Lone Star Conference Tournament 11 times.

In recent seasons, Buzard has worked with Eastern’s inside players at the post and forward positions. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Buzard has been an instructor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at ENMU. He has been directly involved in the on-the-court and administrative duties associated with the women’s basketball program. He has also worked at several summer camps as an instructor and counselor, including the University of Connecticut girls’ basketball camp in 1996 and 1998, and the Kay Yow Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University in 1999 and 2000.

Carter has been the head women’s basketball coach at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, since 1993. He has coached the Lady Falcons to three Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) titles and to three NAIA National Championship Tournament berths (1994, 1995, 2001). He was the head coach at Brown Mackie College from 1991 to 1993, where he developed a new junior college team that achieved 20 wins in its second season of existence.

Carter has also been an assistant men’s basketball coach at Emporia State University in Kansas (1998-90) and at Lincoln Christian College in Illinois (1990-91). At ESU, which competes in NCAA Division II, he worked primarily with perimeter players. He helped develop post players at Lincoln. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Health Education at the University of North Texas in 1987, and received a master’s degree from the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Emporia State in 1990.

He is an instructor in the Department of Physical Education at Friends University, and has been an adjunct faculty member at Sterling College in Lee’s Summit, Mo., as well as a teaching assistant at Emporia State. He is currently a doctoral student with a major in Sport Studies at the University of Kansas.

Wilson has been the head women’s basketball coach at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, since 1996. He owns a 79-72 record, giving him the most victories in the history of the Upper Iowa women’s basketball team, which competes in NCAA Division III. He guided Upper Iowa to a 19-7 record in 2001-02, and was named Iowa Conference and WBCA District 8 Coach-of-the-Year.

At Upper Iowa, Wilson has led his teams to victories over five nationally-ranked teams, including teams ranked as high as #2 and #7. He has coached the Peacocks to the Iowa Conference Tournament all three years since the tournament’s inception in 1999-00.

Wilson was assistant women’s basketball coach at Upper Iowa in 1995-96. He has previous collegiate experience as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania (1993-94), and as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Slippery Rock (1991-93). He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1989. He received a Master of Education in Athletic Administration from Slippery Rock in 1991.

Prior to becoming an assistant coach, he was a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball team at Slippery Rock from 1989-91. He helped SRU qualify for back-to-back NCAA Division II National Tournament berths, plus a #2 national ranking in 1989-90. Wilson is an instructor in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at UIU. He has been head women’s golf coach since 2000-01. He was head women’s tennis coach from 1995-99. Eastern New Mexico University is a member of the Lone Star Conference. ENMU competes in NCAA Division II.
