DEFEAT MIDWESTERN STATE, 7-2
ENMU led Midwestern State, 4-2, when the Indians left the match and started driving back to Wichita Falls, Texas. Prior to MSU’s departure, both teams were waiting for the courts to dry following a rain delay. MSU defaulted at #3 singles, #4 singles, and #5 singles. Midwestern’s team record fell to 7-6 following the loss. The Zias built a 2-1 lead by winning #1 doubles and #3 doubles at the start of the Lone Star Conference match. Lisa Weinman (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (Sr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) combined to defeat Tiffany Burgess and Emilee Black, 8-4, at #1 doubles. Layla Turner (Sr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (Jr., Belen, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) swept through the #3 doubles match, as they defeated Robbie Vittitow and Lacey Wuthridge, 8-0. MSU won a hard-fought match at #2 doubles. Brooke Gray and Sara Butler edged Eastern’s Bethanie Nix (So., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) and Janelle Sanchez (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.), 8-6. Turner, ranked #37 in NCAA Division II in singles, won #1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Gray. Nix was victorious for ENMU at #2 singles, as she defeated Vittitow, 6-1, 6-1. MSU claimed #6 singles when Wuthridge downed Salazar in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Three matches were underway when the Indians left the Zia Tennis Complex. Weinman and Burgess were even at one set apiece in the #3 singles match. They were tied 4-4 in the third set when play stopped. At #4 singles, Eastern’s Sanchez won the first set, and was in front 5-4 against Black in the second set. Pennington and Butler were ready to start the third set at #5 singles. ENMU’s next matches will be at the University of Central Oklahoma Broncho Invitational, April 11-13 in Edmond, Okla. The Zias will take on East Central University (Okla.) on April 11 at 1:00 p.m. (MST), before facing Northwest Missouri State University and Midwestern State on April 12, and taking on Cameron University and Northeastern State University (Okla.) on April 13.
