PORTALES, NM – Senior middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna HS) has been named to the Second Team of the 2002 Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-Southwest Region Volleyball Team. The All-Southwest Region Team was selected by sports information directors at NCAA Division II colleges and universities throughout the Southwest.

Mariner was one of just 12 players chosen for the All-Southwest Region Team. She also was one of six players selected from the Lone Star Conference. Eastern, which competes in the LSC South Division, concluded the year with a 20-12 overall record.
First Team selections to the All-Southwest Region Team were outside hitters Shannon Stroud of West Texas A&M University and Alma Brahimaj from the University of Central Oklahoma, middle blockers Erin Gudmundson of the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Jess Anne Fernandes of West Texas A&M, setter Devon Herron of Metropolitan State University and defensive specialist Charissa Grummon of St. Edwards’s University.
Mariner was joined on the Second Team by middle hitter Chantae Weathers from Texas A&M University-Commerce, outside hitters Erika Figueiredo of St. Edward’s and Nicki Fusco of Metro State, setter Kendra Morgan of WTAMU and defensive specialist Sarah Francis of Mesa State.

Mariner led the Zias with 458 kills (3.6 avg.) and a .257 hitting percentage this season. She concluded the year with 1,695 career kills to set an ENMU record. The old record of 1,687 kills was set by Jennifer Goble Poyer from 1991-95. Mariner previously set the single season ENMU record for kills, as she pounded out 575 kills in 2001.

In addition to leading the Zias in kills this season, Mariner earned a team-high 49 service aces, plus 345 digs (2.7 avg.) and 31 assists. She also led the team with 130 total blocks (1.0 avg.). Her 49 aces tied for the third highest total in Zia volleyball history.
Mariner’s career high for kills came during her sophomore year, when she earned 30 against Angelo State University on Sept. 9, 2000. This season, she achieved a career high for digs by producing 24 against Colorado School of Mines on Aug. 31, 2002. In four seasons with the Zias, Mariner helped ENMU record four consecutive 20-win seasons and a 94-47 (.667) overall record.

She finished her career ranked second all-time at ENMU with 471 career blocks. She also ranked third in career service aces (120) and was fourth in career digs (1,102). She was named First Team Daktronics, Inc., All-Southwest Region in 2000, and was selected as the LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week five times during her career, including twice in 2002 (Sept. 10 and Oct. 14).
