PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University senior offensive guard Jose Martinez (6’2”, 345 lbs., Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) has been named to the First Team of the 2002 Daktronics Division II All-West Region Football Team, as selected by sports information directors at NCAA Division II colleges and universities. ENMU placed senior linebacker Jimmy Hamilton (6’3”, 240 lbs, Artesia, NM/New Mexico State University) and sophomore free safety Ty Touchstone (5’11”, 180 lbs., Lubbock, TX/Monterey HS) on the Second Team. Overall, 25 players received First Team honors and 25 more were named to the Second Team. Martinez and the other First Team selections became eligible for the 2002 Daktronics Division II All-America Football Team. ENMU finished 2002 with an 8-3 record and a 4-2 mark in the LSC South (3rd place tie), as Eastern earned its seventh winning season in nine years under Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott. It was the Greyhounds’ third 8-3 season since 1998 and the team’s fifth straight winning season. Elliott, who owns a record of 56-39-2 (.588) at ENMU and is 193-169-9 (.532) in 35 years as a head coach, was named LSC South Coach-of-the-Year for the fourth time in five seasons. 1st Team All-West Region Martinez was named First Team All-LSC South in 2001 and
2002. He was the leader of ENMU’s offensive line this season. He
helped the Greyhounds set a school record for scoring with 339 points
in 11 games, breaking the previous record of 318 points, which he helped
ENMU set in 2001. Martinez and the offensive line also helped the Hounds
set school records for rushing offense (3,188 yards on 602 carries) and
total offense (4,457 yards on 759 offensive plays) in 2002. He contributed
to Eastern’s 37 rushing touchdowns and nine passing touchdowns this
year. In 2001, his powerful blocking allowed Eastern New Mexico University
to rush for 2,336 yards and pass for 1,319 yards. 2nd Team All-West Region Hamilton was named First Team All-LSC South this season. He recorded 70 total tackles to rank third on the ENMU defense. He achieved 51 unassisted tackles, made 7 tackles for losses and earned 4.0 quarterback sacks for 43 yards in losses. He was named Honorable Mention All-LSC South in 2000 and 2001. Hamilton completed his four seasons at ENMU with 182 total tackles, including 110 unassisted stops. His most successful effort of the 2002 season was in Eastern’s 37-34 victory over eventual national semifinalist Texas A&M-Kingsville, as he earned 18 total tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks. Hamilton transferred to ENMU after one semester at New
Mexico State University, where he did not play football. He started all
11 games this year and recorded 29 starts overall, while playing in 1999,
2000, 2001 and 2002. He saw action in 40 of ENMU’s 42 games during
his career, and missed the remaining two games (both in 2000) due to injury. Touchstone was slated to be ENMU’s back-up free safety this year, but became a starter when returning Second Team All-LSC South player Jonathon Solis (Sr., 5’9”, 177 lbs., Roswell, NM/N.M. Military Inst.) was forced to miss the season with a broken leg. Touchstone filled in successfully, and was ENMU’s leading tackler during six games. He recorded double-digit tackles seven times in Eastern’s 11 games. He ended the season with 146 career tackles. NOTE: Touchstone also was named Second Team All-West Region by D2football.com this year. Martinez received Second Team All-Region honors from D2football.com in 2001 and 2002.
