Eastern New Mexico University Track is Under Construction for New Teams
Expected to be Available for Public Use by Late Spring

PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University is currently refurbishing its
track for the return of men’s and women’s track and field, which will start competing during the Spring 2003 semester. The track will not be ready for the 2003 collegiate track and field season, but should be ready for the public to use for walking and jogging by late spring.

ENMU has arranged with Portales High School to use their track facility until Eastern’s track is renovated. The new track will be converted from 440 yards to 400 meters. The Eurotan SG Polyurethane Surface being installed requires consistently warm weather to solidify. It is the primary reason the track will not be completed during the competitive season.

When the refurbished track is finished, it will be available for members of the campus community as well as local residents for personal exercise. ENMU is requesting that wheeled devices not be used on the track, since they could damage the surface.
According to Lewis Reeves, director of the ENMU Physical Plant, the track will include field event facilities, such as a pole vault pit, high jump area and runways for the long jump and the triple jump. There also will be shot put and discus areas. To reduce the possibility of accidental spearings, the javelin-throwing area will be located outside the oval track.

According to Reeves, the main contractor for the project is Southwest Recreational of Albuquerque, N.M. The sub-contractor is Ramirez and Sons Paving of Clovis, N.M.
