PIONEERS END GAME WITH 14-2 RUN TO DEFEAT ZIAS, 64-53, IN LSC SOUTH GAME
PORTALES, NM – Texas Woman’s University trailed Eastern New Mexico University, 51-50, with 4:37 remaining, but the Pioneers ended the game with a 14-2 run to take a 64-53 victory over the Zias, in Lone Star Conference action, Feb. 14 at Greyhound Arena. Jennifer Ferrell gave TWU the lead with two free throws at the 4:15 mark, helping the Pioneers improve to 9-14 overall and 5-6 in the LSC South. The Zias fell to 5-16 overall and 3-7 in LSC play.

ENMU outrebounded TWU, 46-38, and scored four more baskets than the Pioneers. TWU, however, converted 7 of 20 three-point baskets, including 6 of 9 by Meaghan Lewis. The Zias were 0-6 from three-point range. The Pioneers also converted 21 of 27 free throws (77.8%), while ENMU went to the line just 13 times.The Zias made 9 of their charity shots for 69.2%, but missed three one-and-ones in the second half.

Eastern, which trailed 31-29 at the half, moved in front 49-48 on rebound and follow shot by Jenny Johnson (Fr., F/Post, Jayton, TX/Jayton H.S.) with 6:32 left in the game. After TWU took a 50-49 lead on Jessica Springer’s basket at the 5:24 mark, the Zias regained the lead, 51-50, on two free throws by Tia Doss. ENMU’s final points were provided by Lacy Lee (Fr., G, Portales, NM/Portales H.S.) on a pair of free throws with 0:59 remaining.

Texas Woman’s received a game-high 23 points from Lewis, who was 6 of 10 overall from the field and 5 of 8 at the line. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and earned 2 steals. Ferrell added 12 points and 6 rebounds, while sinking 8 of 10 free throws. Springer finished with 10 points and 7 boards, while Jennifer Hall provided 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Johnson and Juliana Morrison (So., G/F, Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro H.S.) tied for Eastern’s scoring lead with 12 points apiece. Johnson also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, as she recorded a double-double for the Zias. She was 6 of 10 from the field. Doss contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds. Monica Trimble (Jr., F, Amarillo, TX/South Plains College) supplied 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 21 minutes, before leaving the game with a knee injury.

The Zias will host Tarleton State University in an LSC South game on Saturday, Feb. 16. The game is Eastern’s final home contest of the season, with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m. (MST).
