ABILENE CHRISTIAN DEFEATS ENMU, 84-47
ABILENE, TX – Brenda Jacoby led all players with 22 points, leading Abilene Christian University to an 84-47 victory over Eastern New Mexico University, in a Lone Star Conference game, Feb. 23 at Moody Coliseum. Jacoby hit 8 of 10 field goals, including 4 of 4 three-point shots. She also hauled down a total of 7 rebounds, and provided the Wildcats with 4 assists and 3 steals. She scored 14 points in the first half, helping ACU build a commanding 36-18 lead. The Wildcats surged out to a 15-4 lead in the first 5:40 of the game.

Eastern cut the margin to six points at 20-14 with 10:30 to go in the opening half, but ACU responded with a 10-2 run for a 30-16 advantage. Eastern outscored Abilene Christian, 17-14, at the start of the second half to pull within 15 points, but the Zias never got closer the rest of the way.

ENMU was led by Monica Trimble (Jr., F, Amarillo, TX/South Plains College) with 10 points. Tia Doss (Fr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland H.S.) added 8 points and was 4 of 6 from the field. Overall, nine players scored for the Zias.

Jacoby led four Wildcats in double figures. Melanie Carter tallied 18 points and was 6 of 7 from the floor. She also grabbed 5 boards. Kristi Taylor scored 15 points and hauled down 7 rebounds, while Sara McBroom contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. The Wildcats sank 10 of 22 three-pointers, while ENMU hit just 1 of 8 shots from behind the arc.

ACU was 26 of 49 on field goals for the game (53.1%). The Wildcats also sank 22 of 29 free throws. ENMU was 19 of 48 (39.6%) from the field, but made 11 of 21 shots (52.4%) in the second half. The Zias were 8 of 13 at the line. Eastern New Mexico opened the season 2-14.

The Zias won 3 of their next 4 games, but closed the season with five straight losses. ENMU played with nine new players and no seniors, so the Zias look to have a quality base for the 2002-03 season.
