CEDRIC PALMER NAMED LSC SOUTH PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON
PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University junior forward Cedric Palmer (6’6”, 200 lbs., Houston, TX/McLennan C.C./Yates H.S.) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division men’s basketball Player-of-the-Week for the week ending February 23, 2002.

Palmer averaged 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, as ENMU won three LSC South road games to clinch its first LSC Tournament berth since 1996-97. It is the second time Palmer has been named LSC South Player-of-the-Week this season.

Palmer scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, contributed 3 assists and earned 3 steals in Eastern’s 81-77 overtime win at West Texas A&M University on Feb. 18. He scored 6 points and hauled down 4 rebounds during the overtime period.

At Angelo State University on Feb. 21, Palmer tallied 21 points and 9 rebounds, as ENMU defeated the Rams, 86-80.He ended the week by scoring 26 points and providing 13 rebounds in the Greyhounds’ 71-70 win at Abilene Christian University on Feb. 23. He tipped in a missed free throw with 5.1 seconds remaining to give ENMU the game’s final basket and send the Hounds into the LSC Tournament.

The Greyhounds finished the regular season with a 15-11 overall record for Eastern’s first winning season since the 1996-97 team went 18-9. ENMU concluded its LSC South schedule in a tie with Angelo State and West Texas A&M for third place at 6-6. ENMU and Angelo State both earned 2-0 sweeps of WTAMU during the season, and qualified for the final two LSC Tournament berths under conference tie-breaking procedures.

For the week, Palmer shot 52.3% from the field (25 of 47) and converted 73.3% at the free throw line (22 of 30). He also averaged 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Palmer is Eastern’s leading scorer with 15.4 rebounds per game. He also has provided the Hounds with 5.6 rebounds per contest, while shooting 56.9% on field goal attempts.
