TEXAS WOMAN’S DEFEATS ENMU, 64-57
DENTON, TX – Jessica Springer scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading Texas Woman’s University to a 64-57 victory over Eastern New Mexico University, in a Lone Star Conference South Division game, Jan. 19 at Kitty Magee Arena. Texas Woman’s improved to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the LSC South, while the Zias dropped to 2-10, 0-2 in the LSC South.

Texas Woman’s scored just 17 baskets, compared to 24 for ENMU, and the Pioneers made one less 3-pointer than the Zias (5-4), but TWU gained an edge by sinking 26 of 36 free throws, while Eastern made 4 of 10 charity shots. The Pioneers also earned a 52-44 rebounding margin.

The game was close throughout the first half, with ENMU never leading by more than four points and TWU never holding a lead of more than three points. The score was tied 22-22 with 1:07 on the clock, following a basket by Springer. ENMU move in front 23-22, when Jennifer Doherty (Fr., F, Georgetown, TX/Georgetown H.S.) sank the first of two free throws with 51 seconds left in the period.

Neither team scored again until the start of the second half. The Pioneers used a 14-4 run over the first 4:11 of the second half to take a 7-point lead, 36-27. Meaghan Lewis scored two 3-pointers during the run. TWU also converted 6 of 6 free throws during the offensive surge, while ENMU picked up five team fouls.

Eastern reduced the lead to 6 points three times over the next three minutes, including 40-34, with 12:57 left, on a basket by Monica Trimble (Jr., F, Amarillo, TX/South Plains College). TWU countered with a 7-0 run for a 47-34 lead at the 10:55 mark. The Pioneers led the rest of the game, but ENMU pulled within five points, 54-49, with 5:57 left, and trailed by only four points, 61-57, when Loren Scarlett (Fr., Post, Throckmorton, TX/Throckmorton H.S.) scored with 1:54 remaining.

The Zias were unable to score again, while TWU secured the victory with one free throw by Jennifer Ferrell at the 41-second mark, plus two free throws by Springer with 20 seconds left. Springer finished the game 9 of 11 on charity shots, while Ferrell hit 8 of 11 free throws. Jill Stout (So., G, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.) of ENMU tied Springer for scoring honors with 19 points.

Stout was 7 of 17 from the field, but made 4 of 8 three-pointers. Stout also grabbed 4 rebounds and earned 4 assists. Juliana Morrison (So., G/F, Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro H.S.) provided the Zias with 8 points and 7 rebounds, while Scarlett contributed 8 points and 4 boards to go with an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. Tia Doss (Fr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland H.S.) tallied 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

Joining Springer in double figures for TWU were Tiesha Wady with 11 points and Ferrell with 10 points. Springer led all players with 13 rebounds, while Ferrell hauled down 9 rebounds. Ferrell also recorded 4 assists.

The Zias will complete a three-game road trip with a non-conference game at New Mexico Highlands University on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Tipoff in Las Vegas, N.M., is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST). After playing at NMHU, the Zias are scheduled to return to Greyhound Arena for a 5-game homestand against Lone Star Conference South Division opponents. The homestand begins on Thursday, Jan. 24, when ENMU will host Abilene Christian University at 6:00 p.m. (MST).
