RAMBELLES ACHIEVE 62-40 VICTORY OVER ZIAS
PORTALES, NM – Angelo State University held Eastern New Mexico University to 28.8% shooting, as the Rambelles improved to 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference South Division with a 62-40 victory over the Zias at Greyhound Arena, Jan. 26. Angelo State also upped its overall record to 8-9. ENMU fell to 2-13 on the season, 0-4 in the LSC South.

The Zias led 4-0 on two baskets by Tia Doss (Fr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland H.S.), but fell behind 7-4 and 16-8. Eastern record the next basket to pull within six points, then went over four minutes without scoring, as ASU went on a 10-0 run. The Rambelles owned a 26-10 lead with 7:27 left in the half. Angelo State remained in front, 30-17, at halftime, and led by double-digit margins most of the second half.

ENMU pulled within 9 points, 44-35, at the 6:14 mark, but the Rambelles embarked on a 12-3 run that doubled the lead to 18 points, 56-38, with 1:44 left. Five Rambelles concluded the game with at least 10 points.

Sharon Ballenger led the way with 14 points, and was 5 of 10 from the floor. Kelli Anne Goble and Tammara Ringer each added 11 points, while Kami Williamson and Esponosha Gilliam scored 10 points apiece. Jaclyn Nowlin provided 7 rebounds, helping the Rambelles claim a 43-42 rebounding edge. Gilliam and Courtney Nowlin hauled down 6 boards each.

Doss was the only ENMU player in double figures. She scored 15 points, sank 6 of 9 field goals, went 3 for 3 at the line, and grabbed 6 rebounds. Laci Lee (Fr., G, Portales, NM/Portales H.S.) earned 7 points and 6 rebounds. Loren Scarlett (Fr., Post, Throckmorton, TX/Throckmorton H.S.) led the Zias with 9 rebounds.

ENMU was 17 of 59 from the field, and made just 1 of 12 three-point attempts. The Zias also committed 16 turnovers, while ASU lost the ball just 9 times. Angelo State shot 36.9% during the game (24 of 65) and made 5 of 13 three-pointers.The Rambelles recorded 11 steals, with Jaclyn Nowlin and Ballenger registering 3 steals apiece.

The Zias will play the third game in their 5-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 26, when arch rival West Texas A&M University travels to Greyhound Arena for an LSC South game. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST). The evening will get underway at bit earlier with a FREE tailgate party in the Arena parking lot, starting at 5:30 p.m.
