DeHOYOS THROWS COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUT AS ENMU SPLITS WITH TAMU-KINGSVILLE
KINGSVILLE, TX – Senior right-handed pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) threw a complete-game shutout, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 4-0, in the first game of a Lone Star Conference double-header, Mar. 1 at Nolan Ryan Field. TAMU-Kingsville won the second game, 3-2, in eight innings. The Greyhounds are now 6-11 on the season, 5-3 in the LSC South. TAMUK is now 9-10 overall, 1-4 in the LSC South.The teams will complete their 3-game weekend series with a single 9-inning game on Saturday, Mar. 2, starting at 11:00 a.m. (MST).

DeHoyos gave up just 4 hits, all singles, and struck out 3 batters, while improving to 2-2 on the season. TAMU-Kingsville managed one hit in each of the first three innings, then went without a hit until the bottom of the seventh. DeHoyos has struck out 33 batters in 33 1/3 innings pitched this season, while limiting opponents to a combined .236 batting average. In the opener, the Greyhounds struck early for a 1-0 lead.

Xarin Escobedo (Sr., SS, Mexico City, MEX/El Paso C.C.) singled to left field with one out in the first inning. He advanced to second on a ground out by Marc Wallace (Fr., CF, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.), and reached third on a stolen base. He scored when Dallas McMann (Jr., C/DH, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) doubled to right field. It was the only extra-base hit of the day for either team.

ENMU added two more runs in the fourth inning and completed the scoring with a single run in the seventh inning. Chris Hill (Jr., 2B, Boise, ID/Scottsdale C.C.) and Aaron Dunn (So., OF, Carlsbad, NM/N.M. Military Institute) each hit RBI singles in the fourth. Hill’s single drove in Barrero (Jr., 1B, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.). Dunn’s hit allowed Hill to score with two outs. In the seventh, Wallace and McMann hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Wallace scored when McMann’s hit was misplayed in right field.

DeHoyos got Chris Mash to pop up to shortstop as Kingsville’s leadoff batter in the seventh. Mike Aguirre followed with a single to center field, but the Hounds preserved the shutout when Lee Rodriguez hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

TAMUK starter Mike Huddleston threw all seven innings for the Javelinas. He recorded 4 strikeouts and allowed 9 hits. He gave up all 4 runs, but just 2 were earned. In the second game, TAMU-Kingsville scored one run in the bottom of the first stanza. Three consecutive hits by Kyle Gunn, John Dean and Bryan Shippey, plus a passed ball prior to Shippey’s at bat, allowed the Javelinas to score.

ENMU starter Kevin Hull (Jr., RHP, New Braunfels, TX/Richland College) got out of the jam by forcing two fly outs and a groundout. ENMU tied the game in the top of the second inning. McMann opened the stanza with a single, but was eventually put out on a fielder’s choice. Barrero, who reached on the fielder’s choice, advance to second while McMann was caught in a run down for the first out.

With two outs, Barrero moved to third on a passed ball. After Hill walked, Barrero scored on a single to left field by Dunn. The Hounds took a 2-1 lead when Wallace walked and scored in the sixth inning. McMann sacrificed Wallace to second with a bunt toward first base. Wallace reached third on a ground out by Barrero.

Ryan Dickson (Sr., 1B/DH, Trail, BC/Big Bend C.C.) was intentionally walked, and the Greyhounds entered Matt Sulli (Sr., OF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) as a pinch runner. Wallace scored on a double steal, as Sulli advanced to second. Rodriguez scored the tying run for Kingsville in the bottom of the sixth. He walked to open the inning, then was sacrificed to second by Denzil Davis. Rodriguez went to third on a ground out by Armando Huerta, then scored on a wild pitch.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning, and TAMUK held ENMU scoreless in the top of the eighth. The Javelinas scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Davis singled for TAMU-Kingsville with one out, and advance to second on a single by Aaron Higginbotham. Davis moved on to third when Gunn was walked, then scored on a squeeze bunt for a single by Dean.

McMann was Eastern’s top hitter on the day. He went 3 for 4 in the opener, and was 2 for 3 in the second game. Wallace was 2 for 4 in the first game. Eastern pounded out 9 hits in the victory, but managed just 3 hits in the extra-inning loss.

TAMUK had four players with one hit in the opener, but Bryan Shippey went 2 for 4 and Dean was 2 for 5 in the nightcap. Josh Harris, who threw a complete-game in Kingsville’s win, struck out 10 Greyhounds.

Hull pitched 6 1/3 innings for ENMU in the nightcap, and struck out 3 batters while allowing 2 runs. Reliever Ian Thurman-Kelly (So., LHP, Denver, CO/Lamar C.C.) went to the mound with one out and a runner on second in the seventh inning. He took the loss, and fell to 2-2 on the season.
