DAVIS THROWS COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUT AS GREYHOUNDS SPLIT WITH COLORADO MINES
PORTALES, NM – Freshman pitcher Trevor Davis (Evergreen, CO/Evergreen H.S.) threw a complete-game shutout, as Eastern New Mexico University won the first game of a double-header with Colorado School of Mines, 8-0, March 10 at Greyhound Field. In the second game, the Orediggers scored 5 unearned runs on 5 ENMU errors to split the double-header with a 7-4 win. Colorado Mines, which won 3 of 4 games during the four-game weekend series, improved to 14-2 overall. ENMU dropped to 8-16 on the season.

Davis struck out 9 batters, allowed 7 hits - all singles - and gave up 2 walks. Only two CSM runners advanced to third base. The Orediggers had Mike Cerbo at first and Brent Whitcomb at third with one out in the sixth inning. Davis struck out Terry Packer and Eric Poeck to end the threat.

In the seventh, Ryan Phillips singled, and pinch-runner Jordan Rudel stole second base. Rudel advanced to third on a ground out, then Tommy Harris struck out. Hondo Hanagan walked to put runners at first and third, but Davis struck out Kelly Berndt to end the game. It was Davis’ second consecutive complete-game victory.

On Wednesday, Mar. 6, he earned the win in Eastern’s 8-1 triumph at New Mexico Highlands, giving up only an unearned run. Davis limited the Cowboys to 3 hits, while striking out 4 batters. The win over CSM improved his record to 2-1 on the season. He owns a team-leading 2.83 earned run average.

Luz Leal, Jr. (Jr., OF/P, Laredo, TX/Alexander Magnet H.S.), Franco Barrero (1B/RF, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.) and Chris Hill (Jr., 2B, Denver, CO/Lamar C.C.) each went 2 for 3 in Eastern’s win over the Orediggers. Hill led all players with 2 RBIs. The game was scoreless until ENMU plated 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leal was hit by a pitch to open the stanza, and Dallas McMann (Jr., C/DH, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) followed with a walk.

Another walk, an error and a wild pitch all occurred later in the inning. Eastern recorded just two hits in the stanza, as Barrero and Hill earned back-to-back singles to drive home Leal with the game’s first run. Ian Thurman-Kelly (So., P/LF, Denver, CO/Lamar C.C.) walked in a run, while Mark Wallace (Fr., CF, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) brought in the final run with a ground out.

ENMU completed the scoring with 3 runs in the fifth inning. Hill drove in McMann with one run, and Barrero scored the second run when the catcher’s throw went into the outfield as Gabe DeHoyos (Sr., P/DH, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) stole second base. DeHoyos advanced to third on the play, and later scored when Thurman-Kelly reached base on an error by the shortstop. Leal registered the game’s only extra-base hit when he doubled to left field to start the fifth inning. He was thrown out at home attempting to score when McMann followed with a single.

In the first game, the Greyhounds took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Orediggers countered by scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third stanza. Eastern’s first inning included RBI singles by McMann, Barrero and Hill. Wallace also singled and scored on McMann’s hit. Colorado Mines received a 2-RBI single from Mike Schmitz in the second inning, then benefited from a 2-RBI single by Phillips and an RBI single by Rudel in the third inning.

All three third-inning runs were unearned due to a pair of ENMU errors. Two more errors with two outs in the seventh inning helped Colorado Mines score the final runs of the game. The first error allowed Rudel to reach first base, sending Kevin Baird, who singled earlier in the inning, to third. Phillips walked to load the bases, then Ryan Ishino singled to left field. Rudel scored on the play, and an outfield error allowed Phillips to score as well.

ENMU pitcher Jerry Macias (Jr., RHP, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) threw a solid game. He allowed just 2 earned runs, which were aided by a single that fell untouched as Thurman-Kelly and Xarin Escobedo (Sr., SS, Mexico City, MEX/El Paso C.C.) nearly collided in the second inning. Macias struck out 7 batters and gave up 8 hits, all singles, as he dropped to 0-4 on the season.

Matt Gilbreath also threw a complete game for Colorado Mines. He registered 4 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks, but also hit five batters, including Ryan Dickson (Sr., 1B/DH, Trial, BC/Big Bend C.C.) three times. He matched Macias by allowing 8 singles. Gilbreath improved to 4-0. Wallace went 2 for 3 and scored one run, while McMann and Barrero were both 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
