RHOTEN NAMED LSC SOUTH PITCHER-OF-THE-WEEK Rhoten’s pitching helped the Zias defeat Fort Lewis 4-2 in the second game of the series on Mar. 6 and 9-4 in the final game of the series on Mar. 7. She gave up no earned runs in her first appearance, then allowed just two earned runs in her second start. ENMU won the other two games, taking the series opener 6-5 and winning the third game of the series, 10-6. In 14 innings, Rhoten struck out 9 batters during the week. She allowed 5 hits and struck out 4 batters in her first win over the Skyhawks. She closed out the series by throwing a 7-hitter with 5 strikeouts. Not only did Rhoten provide solid pitching during the week, she also hit .333 with 4 hits in 12 at bats. She scored 3 runs and drove in 5 runs, including 4 RBIs on a grand slam in the first inning of the first game against Fort Lewis. As a pitcher, Rhoten is 4-3 on the season with 47 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings pitched. She has limited Eastern’s opponents to a .257 batting average, while making 11 appearances, including 8 starts. She has registered 5 complete-game performances this year. The Zias, who reached the NCAA Division II National Finals and tied for 5th place in 2001, are currently 14-8 this season. ENMU will play at the Columbus State University Tournament Mar. 15-16. The Zias will take on South Carolina Aiken at 9:00 a.m. (MST) on Friday, Mar. 15. The Zias will play defending national champion Nebraska-Omaha at 1:00 p.m. (MST) on Friday, and will close out pool play against St. Cloud State at 5:00 p.m. (MST) on Friday. Bracket play is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 16. |
