EASTERN
FINISHES COLUMBUS STATE TOURNAMENT WITH WIN OVER N.C. CENTRAL, LOSS
TO HUNTSVILLE
COLUMBUS,
GA Eastern New Mexico University defeated North Carolina
Central University, 13-1, but lost to the University of Alabama-Huntsville,
3-2, as the Zias went 1-1 in Silver Bracket (Consolation) action at
the
Columbus State University Tournament, Mar. 16, in Columbus, Ga. ENMU
moved
to 16-11 on the season. Alabama-Huntsville's win over the Zias gave
the
Chargers the Silver Bracket championship, as UAH improved to 18-12 overall.
Thewin-loss record for NCCU was not available.
ENMU
tied for fourth place out of seven teams in Pool B during
preliminary round action on March 15. The Zias and Georgia College were
tied
at 1-2 in pool play, but the Lady Bobcats won the tie-breaker for fourth
place. As a result, Georgia College was placed in the championship Gold
Bracket and ENMU went into the consolation Silver Bracket.
In
the Gold Bracket, defending NCAA Division II national champion
the University of Nebraska-Omaha defeated Mississippi University for
Women,
8-2, shut out Columbus State, 8-0, and edged Kennesaw State, 3-1, to
win the
overall championship.
The
Zias are scheduled to return to Portales before they travel to
Kingsville, Texas, for the start of Lone Star Conference South Division
play
on Mar. 22-23. The Zias, who won the 2001 LSC South Division title at
12-2,
will take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a double-header
on Friday,
Mar. 22, at 12:00 p.m. (MST), followed by another double-header against
the
Javelinas on Saturday, Mar. 23, at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
