JAVELINAS
SWEEP DOUBLE-HEADER FROM ENMU In the first game, Gutierrez faced just 23 batters in tossing a complete game. She gave up two hits, both singles, by Bobbi Richardson (Fr., UT, Kerrville, TX/Tivy H.S.) and Vicki Davis (Jr., OF, Gilbert, AZ/Glendale C.C.). She registered 10 strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. Gutierrez also picked up the win in the second game, as she threw the final 2 2/3 innings in relief of Mehgan King. Gutierrez added another 6 strikeouts in her relief appearance. She upped her season win-loss record to 17-5. TAMUK took an early 2-0 lead in the first game. Janelle Ortega walked to start the bottom of the first inning. She scored when Kelli Huston followed with a triple to right center. Huston crossed the plate one out later, when Ria Hoog singled to center field. Stacey Fleming hit into a double play to end the inning. Wendy Wagster doubled with one out in the fifth inning to set up TAMUK’s final run. The Javelinas put in Michelle Bartch to run for Wagster. She moved to third on a single by Leslie Zambrano, then scored on a double steal. Zambrano reached third on an error, but the Zias forced TAMU into back-to-back ground outs to complete the stanza. The second game was scoreless until Kingsville pushed across a run in the fourth inning. With one out, Fleming tripled to right field and Amanda Sustaita doubled to left center. Fleming scored on the play. Wagster followed with another double, but Sustaita was tagged out by third baseman Rachel Mohler (Sr., Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.). ENMU equalized in the top of the sixth inning, when Jessica Rowley (Sr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) reached on a fielding error and eventually scored. Mohler earned the RBI when her double to left field plated Rowley from second base. Amanda Langford (Jr., OF, Mesquite, TX/Lon Morris J.C.) ran for Mohler, but ENMU was unable to score the go-ahead run. Kim Barajas (Fr., C/3B, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) singled for ENMU with two outs in the seventh inning, and Ortega doubled for TAMU-Kingsville with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but neither runner scored. The game headed into extra-innings still tied, 1-1. Gutierrez threw out Dalia Flores (Sr., C, Allen, TX/Vernon Regional J.C.) on a bunt to start the ENMU eights inning. She then registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Norman was the first batter in the bottom of the inning. She abruptly ended the game with a home run to left center. It was her sixth home run of the season. The game-winning homer by Norman gave TAMUK a slim 9-8 edge in hits during the contest. ENMU was led by Barajas and Mohler, who each went 2 for 4. Rowley was 1 for 4 with a run scored, while Sarah Ramirez (Fr., OF, San Antonio, TX/Providence H.S.), Rhoten and Davis each supplied one hit. For TAMUK, Ortega was 2 for 4 with a double, and Fleming was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Katina Arocha (Jr., RHP, San Antonio, TX/Lon Morris J.C.) threw 5 2/3 innings for the Zias in the opener. She dropped to 2-2 with the loss, but gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk. Lauren King (So., RHP, La Mirada, CA/La Serna H.S.) recorded a strikeout while facing just one batter. Maegan Rhoten (So., P/LF, Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) threw a complete game for the Zias in the second contest. She struck out 6 batters and gave up 2 walks. She also battled through five extra-base hits by the Javelinas in the first seven innings, as she held TAMU to just one run. Rhoten fell to 6-4 with the loss.
