ZIAS SWEEP DOUBLE-HEADER AGAINST UT-PERMIAN BASIN
PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University belted 29 hits in two games and the University of Texas-Permian Basin earned just 3 hits, as the Zias swept a double-header on Wednesday, March 27, defeating the Falcons, 16-0 and 22-0. Both games ended on the run rule in five innings. ENMU upped its overall record to 19-14. UT-Permian Basin dropped to 8-8.

In the opener, sophomore pitcher Maegan Rhoten (Albuquerque, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) threw a one-hitter to improve to 7-4 on the season. She almost threw a no-hitter, as UTPB’s only hit was a bloop single into left field by pitcher Jennifer Parker with one out in the fifth inning.The ENMU offense, which plated one runs in the first inning and scored two runs in the second inning, exploded for 10 runs in the third stanza.

Jessica Rowley (Sr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) and Vicki Davis (Jr., OF, Gilbert, AZ/Glendale C.C.) each hit a 2-RBI single during the inning. Rachel Mohler (Sr., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) connected for a pair of singles during the stanza, while Dawn Murray (Jr., 1B/P, Carlsbad, NM/Carslbad H.S.) walked twice, and Rhoten earned 2 RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.

The Zias sent 15 batters to the plate during the inning. Mohler drove in one of Eastern’s four runs in the fourth inning with a double to left field. Rhoten earned another RBI on a bases-loaded walk, and Davis brought home a run when she was hit by a pitch. The final run was scored by Murray when Jessica Cook (Jr., OF, San Antonio, TX/Lon Morris J.C.) reached base on an error by the second baseman.

ENMU finished the opener with 10 hits. Mohler was 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Davis was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and Rowley was 1 for 2 with a run and 3 RBIs. In the second game, Eastern took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mohler drove in Murray with the first run on a double down the left field line. Mohler scored when Rhoten followed with another double. The Zias continued to pound the ball the rest of the game.

Eastern added six runs in the second inning, plus five runs in the third inning and nine runs in the fourth stanza. Davis blasted the only home run of the double-header, a solo shot with one out in the second inning. It was her third homer of the season.

Eastern amassed 19 hits in the second game. Mohler went 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. She finished the day with 7 hits in 8 at bats, to go with 6 runs and 5 RBIs. Rhoten was 3 for 3 with a run and 3 RBIs in the nightcap. Cook and Crystale Moore (Jr., OF, Albuquerque, NM/ Manzano H.S.) each went 2 for 2, while Davis was 2 for 3 and Kim Barajas (Fr., C/3B, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) was 2 for 4.

The Falcons managed just 2 hits in the second game. Holly Lemons broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle to start the fourth inning. Jennifer Inkster added a single to left field to open the fifth inning. ENMU pitcher Lauren King (So., RHP, La Mirado, CA/La Serna H.S.) threw a complete game. She struck out three batters and walked one batter, while improving to 9-4 on the season.

Eastern will return to Zia Softball Field on Friday, March 29, for a Lone Star Conference double-header against Angelo State University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST). ENMU and ASU will play a second double-header on Saturday, March 30, at 12:00 noon (MST). The 4-game series with ASU will continue a 10-game homestand that started against UT-Permian Basin.
