PUEBLO, CO – Eastern New Mexico University won every flight except #1 doubles, as the Zias easily defeated the University of Southern Colorado, 8-1, March 28 in Pueblo, Colo. ENMU improved to 5-2 against NCAA Division II teams this season.

Layla Turner (Sr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) led Eastern’s sweep of the singles matches, as she was won #1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Danielle McDermott. Bethanie Nix (So., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) defeated Amber Bettis at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

The toughest battle in singles play was at #3 singles, where Lisa Weinman (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) defeated Maggie Welte, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). ENMU lost just one game while winning every set at #4, #5 and #6 singles.

Southern Colorado picked up its only victory at #1 doubles, when McDermott and Bettis edged Weinman and Sarah Pennington (Sr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.), 8-6. The Zias, however, won the #2 doubles and #3 doubles flights without losing a game to the Thunderwolves. Nix and Janelle Sanchez (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola H.S.) won #2 doubles. Turner and Sarah Salazar (Jr., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) won #3 doubles.

The Zias will remain in Pueblo on Friday to take on the University of Northern Colorado. Match time is scheduled for 12:00 noon (MST). In the latest NCAA Division II national rankings, UNC is tied for #40 and ENMU is ranked #31.
