CEDRIC PALMER NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-LSC SOUTH
PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University junior forward Cedric Palmer (6’6, 200 lbs., Houston, TX/McLennan C.C./Yates H.S.) has been named First Team All-Lone Star Conference South Division for the 2001-02 season as selected by the LSC South head coaches. Palmer was one of just five players from the seven LSC South member universities named to the First Team.

Palmer led the Greyhounds with 15.1 points per game, with a total of 408 points in 27 games. He also led the team with 150 rebounds, an average of 5.6 rebounds per game. Palmer shot 56.2% from the field, as he connected on 145 of 258 shots. He converted 71.4% at the line (118 of 165).

In Eastern’s LSC Tournament-clinching 3-0 road trip at the end of the regular season, Palmer averaged 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. He also tipped in a missed free throw with 5.1 seconds left in the season finale at Abilene Christian University on Feb. 23 to clinch ENMU’s playoff berth.

Palmer was named LSC South Player-of-the-Week for his efforts. He also earned LSC South Player-of-the-Week honors for the week ending Jan. 6, 2002. "Cedric was our most consistent offensive performer for the balance of the conference schedule," ENMU Head Coach Shawn Scanlan said. "For the 12 South Division games, he averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and gave us a real presence inside. He carried us during the three games that we had to win on the road to get into the Lone Star Conference Tournament with consistent scoring and rebounding those final three games."

Joining Palmer as First Team All-LSC South picks were junior forward Danny Jones and junior center Vincent Bridgewater from Tarleton State, senior forward Tyree Williams from Angelo State, and senior forward Tyrone Palmer from TAMU-Commerce. Jones was named LSC South Player-of-the-Year. Lonn Reisman of Tarleton State was named LSC South Coach-of-the-Year.

Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors went to forward Eric Potter, and the Freshman-of-the-Year award went to forward Richard Gonzalez, both from TAMU-Kingsville. Palmer helped the Greyhounds finish the season with a 15-12 overall record, including 6-6 in the LSC South (3rd place tie).It was Eastern’s first winning record since the 1996-97 team went 18-9. Eastern also earned it first LSC Tournament berth since 1996-97.

"Cedric became the impact player we thought he could be following a very unfortunate early-season injury (dislocated knee cap)," Scanlan said. "He gave us an inside presence that we needed to take this program in a forward direction. This recognition is an indication of what other coaches in our conference thought of his efforts. His inclusion on this All-Conference team is one that was earned and deserved."
