MAGUIRE NAMED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY
Served as Interim A.D. Since June of 2001
PORTALES, NM-- Mike Maguire has been named athletic director at Eastern New Mexico University, effective immediately, Dr. Steve Gamble, president of ENMU, announced today. Maguire, in his 15th season on the ENMU coaching staff, has been interim athletic director since June 8, 2001.

Maguire will continue to be the head coach of Eastern’s volleyball team, which he has coached since 1987. “In the seven months I have been at Eastern, I have noted the exceptional work of Coach Maguire,” Dr. Gamble said. “He has the confidence of the coaches and student-athletes, and he will be a very good permanent athletic director.”

Maguire, 43, has achieved a 317-187 record (.629) at Eastern. His career record, including one season as head coach at Chadron State College (Nebr.), is 332-202 (.622). At ENMU, he has averaged more than 20 wins per season and has guided the Zias to 13 consecutive winning records.

He led ENMU to the LSC regular season title in 1991 and to regular season and tournament titles in 1993. The 1998, 1999 and 2000 teams reached the semifinals of the LSC Tournament, while the 2001 team advanced to the LSC championship game.The Zias have reached at least the semifinals of the LSC Tournament nine times since 1991. Maguire was named LSC Coach-of-the-Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995, and was chosen LSC South Coach-of-the-Year in 1999. The Zias earned the best record in school history in 1993, finishing 33-6 overall.

“I am honored that I have been given this opportunity,” Maguire said. “I look forward to the challenges ahead, and I am excited about continued work with such a fine coaching staff.” Maguire and his wife, Trish, live in Portales. Trish is an instructor in the ENMU College of Business. The Maguires are active in the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and other community activities.
