HOUNDS AND COWBOYS SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER
Trevor Davis Throws 3-Hitter as ENMU wins 2nd Game
LAS VEGAS, NM Freshman pitcher Trevor Davis (RHP, Evergreen, CO/Evergreen H.S.) threw a complete-game 3-hitter, as Eastern New Mexico University won the second game of a double-header, 8-1, over New Mexico Highlands University, Mar. 6 at Brandt Park. NMHU scored 7 runs in the sixth inning to win the first game, 13-8. Eastern moved to 7-13 overall, while Highlands advanced to 7-11 on the season.

Davis, now 1-1 on the season, gave up just one extra-base hit, a double by Hastings in the second inning. The Cowboys only hits the rest of the way were lone singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Davis struck out 4 batters and allowed 2 walks. The Greyhounds scored two runs in the first, one run in the third and another run in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.

In the first inning, Mark Wallace (Fr., CF, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) singled and Matt Sulli (Sr., OF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) was hit by a pitch. Chris Hill (Jr., 2B, Boise, ID/Scottsdale C.C.) doubled to right field, scoring Wallace with the game’s first run. Sulli later scored on a single by Ryan Dickson (Sr., 1B/DH, Trail, BC/Big Bend C.C.) Hill and Dallas McMann (Jr., C/DH, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) hit back-to-back singles with one out in the third inning. Hill scored one out later on a single by Franco Barrero (Jr., 1B/DH, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.).

Sulli opened the fifth inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by McMann. NMHU tallied its only run in the bottom of the fifth, when Adam Augustine walked with one out. Matt Planeta pinch-ran for Augustine and advanced to second on a single by Nick Royle.

Paul Hill followed with an infield grounder, which ENMU misplayed for the only error of the game. Planeta then scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Marty Real. Eastern added four runs in the top of the seventh stanza to complete the scoring. Sulli recorded his second leadoff hit of the game, a solo homer for his first four-bagger of the season.

Hill, McMann, Barrero each singled and scored during the inning. Barrero, Steven Romano (Jr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) and Xarin Escobedo (Sr., SS/2B, Mexico City, MEX/El Paso C.C.) recorded RBIs. The Greyhounds amassed 6 hits during the inning. In the first game, Highlands led 6-1 after four innings, but ENMU surged into the lead with 7 runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Greyhounds blasted 9 hits, including doubled by Barrero, Aaron Dunn (So., OF, Carlsbad, NM/N.M. Military Institute) and Hill. Dickson added a 2-RBI single during the inning. The Cowboys responded with 7 runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Six NMHU hits and one ENMU error occurred during the inning. Rael hit a 2-run double and Nick Giacone provided a 3-RBI single. A single by Lucas Hastings, plus an outfield error on the play, allowed Giacone to score and Hastings to move to third base. Chris Wainhouse brought in the final run with a single.

ENMU and Highlands combined for five doubles and three home runs during the game. All three homers came during the first four innings. Dickson blasted a leadoff homer for ENMU in the second inning, Rael smacked a 2-run homer in the third inning for the Cowboys, and Wainhouse added a 2-run homer for NMHU in the fourth inning.

Andy Padilla threw all seven innings for Highlands. He gave up 14 hits, struck out 4 batters and allowed 1 walk. Jerry Macias (Jr., RHP, Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) threw into the sixth inning for the Hounds. He allowed 9 runs (8 earned) and gave up 12 hits. Macias, now 0-3 on the season, struck out 3 batters and walked 2 batters.

Gabe DeHoyos (Sr., RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) of ENMU faced the final eight batters in the sixth inning. He gave up 4 runs (3 earned) and allowed four hits. He also struck out one batter and put one runner on base with a walk. McMann was 4 for 4 in the opener and 3 for 4 in the second game. He has recorded 16 hits in 19 at bats in Eastern’s last five games.

Dickson was 3 for 7 with two runs and four RBIs on the day. Barrero went 5 of 7 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, including 3 hits in 4 at bats in Game #2. Escobedo and Dunn each went 2 for 4 in the first game. Sulli was 2 for 3 with 2 runs and an RBI in the second game. Hill was 4 for 8 overall, with 4 runs and 2 RBIs.

Giacone, Hastings and Royle each earned a hit in both games for NMHU. Giacone was 3 for 7 in the double-header with 1 run and 3 RBIs. Hastings added 3 hits in 6 at bats, and Royle provided 3 hits in 7 at bats. In the first game, Wainhouse was 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs, and Rael was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 4 RBIs. Ed Neville (0-1) suffered the loss in Game #2.

ENMU returns to action with a 4-game series at Greyhound Field against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Mar. 9 and Sunday, Mar. 10. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST) on Saturday, followed by a 12:00 noon (MST) start on Sunday.
