MOHLER, ROWLEY EACH HOMER AS ENMU SWEEPS FORT LEWIS, 6-5 AND 4-3
PORTALES, NMRachel Mohler (Sr., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) hit a solo homer in the first game and Jessica Rowley (Sr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) blasted a solo homer in the second game, as Eastern New Mexico University swept a double-header from Fort Lewis College on Mar. 6, winning 6-5 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game. ENMU improved to 12-8 on the season. Fort Lewis dropped to 8-14. The Zias and Skyhawks will play another double-header on Thursday, Mar. 7.

In the first game, Mohler homered in the third inning and recorded the game-winning RBI in the sixth, as the Zias broke a 5-5 tie. Alison Montbriand (Sr., 2B, Austin, TX/Hill College) started the sixth with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Langford (Jr., OF, Mesquite, TX/Lon Morris J.C.). Dawn Murray (Jr., 1B/P, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) hit a line drive to shortstop, but Montbriand quickly returned to second base to avoid a double play.

Mohler, who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs during the game, was Eastern’s next batter. She singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Montbriand with the go-ahead run. Relief pitcher Katina Arocha (Jr., RHP, San Antonio, TX/Lon Morris J.C.), who entered the game in the top of the sixth, closed out the victory in the seventh. She gave up a leadoff single to Cali Doughty, and walked Bonnie Mathews with two outs, but forced Francine Amador into a game-ending fly ball to second base. Arocha struck out 3 batters - all in the sixth inning - while improving to 2-0 on the season.

ENMU starter Lauren King (So., RHP, La Mirada, CA/La Serna H.S.) gave up 8 hits over five innings. She allowed 5 runs, but just 3 of the runs were earned. She recorded 7 strikeouts and walked 2 batters. Mandy Smith pitched a complete game for Fort Lewis, and fell to 4-3. ENMU took an early 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the first inning.

Vicki Davis (Jr., OF, Gilbert, AZ/Glendale C.C.) drove in two of the runs with a two-out infield single to shortstop. The other run scored when Dalia Flores (Sr., C, Allen, TX/Vernon Regional J.C.) followed with a single up the middle. Fort Lewis cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but ENMU gained one run back in the bottom of the stanza.

The Skyhawks added two more runs in the fourth inning - Kate Hubert hit a 2-run double - to tied the score, 4-4. Montbriand crossed the plate for Eastern in the bottom of the fourth, and Stephanie Schlieman scored for FLC in the top of the fifth. The score remained 5-5 until Montbriand added the winning run in the sixth.

In the second game, Rowley’s home run to right center field opened the second inning, as ENMU took a 1-0 lead. Montbriand and Sarah Ramirez (Fr., OF, San Antonio, TX/Providence H.S.) hit back-to-back singles to start the second inning, with Montbriand scoring later in the stanza on a two-out single by Rowley.

The Zias increased their advantage to 4-0 with two runs in the fifth inning. Montbriand reached base on an error, then advanced to third base on a single by Ramirez. Montriand scored and Ramirez advanced to third base on a passed ball. One out later, Murray drove in Ramirez with a sacrifice fly to the foul territory in left field. Rowley popped out to end the inning.

Fort Lewis scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth. A single, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. Bonnie Mathews hit into a fielder’s choice, as ENMU threw out Jenny Berry at home plate. The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard when a pick-off throw from home to first caught Murray off guard and allowed all three runners to advance one base. Cali Doughty scored on the play. Schlieman went to third, and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Skyhawks had runners at first and second with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but Rhoten shut down the threat to earn a complete-game victory. Fly outs by Hubert to center field, and by Berry to left field, ended the game. Rhoten evened her record at 3-3. Tara Berg, who threw a complete game for FLC, dropped to 3-6 on the season.

Rhoten gave up 5 hits (4 singles), struck out 4 batters and allowed 2 walks. Berg fell victim to 9 Eastern hits, but struck out 3 batters and did not allow a walk. Ramirez led ENMU in the second game with 3 hits in 3 at bats. Rowley and Karena Martinez (So., C/OF, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) were both 2 for 3. Rowley also scored once and had 2 RBIs. Montbriand, who went 3 for 5 on the day, was 1 for 2 with 2 runs in the second game.

Schlieman was 2 for 2 and Berry was 2 for 3 for the Skyhawks. In the first game, Montbriand was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored for ENMU. Flores was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Davis was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. For Fort Lewis, Schwarz went 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Hubert was 2 for 4, while also scoring a run and driving in two runs.
