LAS CRUCES, NM – Sinnamonn Garrett scored 35 points, leading the Lady Aggies of New Mexico State University to an 83-60 victory over the Eastern New Mexico University Zias, in an exhibition game, Nov. 18 at the Pan American Center. NMSU led by just five points, 31-26, at halftime, but pulled away in the final 20 minutes by scoring 52 second-half points. Both teams were preparing for the start of the regular season. NMSU, which competes in NCAA Division I, will begin its season on Monday, Nov. 25 at Long Beach State. ENMU, which competes in NCAA Division II, starts its season on Friday, Nov 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 at the University of Southern Colorado Classic in Pueblo, Colo. The Zias will play Oklahoma anhandle State University on Friday at 1 p.m. (MST) and will take on Southern Colorado on Saturday at 5 p.m. (MST). ENMU was led by junior forward Juliana Morrison (Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro HS) with 11 points. Freshman guard Elizabeth Richards (Texico, NM/Texico HS) added 10 points, and connected on 3 of 5 three-point shots. Laci Lee (So., G, Portales, NM/Portales HS) contributed eight points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Zias, while Tia Doss (So., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) provided seven points. Valencia Rollins (Sr., Post, Long Beach, CA (Western Wyoming College) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. ENMU shot 44.0% from the field (22 of 50), including 7 of 12 three-point shots (58.3%). NMSU forced the Zias into 30 turnovers and benefited from
Eastern’s poor shooting at the free throw line (9 of 21, 42.9%).
The Lady Aggies also struggled at the charity stripe, sinking just 10
of 19 free throw attempts (52.6%). NMSU was credited with 22 turnovers. New Mexico State scored the next 12 points, including eight
by Garrett on two free throws and a pair of 3-pointers. Garrett’s
second 3-pointer during the run gave NMSU the lead, 22-20, with 3:53 left
in the half. The Lady Aggies added a free throw for a 23-20 advantage
before ENMU scored again. NMSU never gave up the lead the rest of the
way. The Zias never got closer, as NMSU built a 70-53 lead with 4:36 to go. The Lady Aggies attained a 20-point margin on Garrett’s layup with 2:48 remaining. Garrett was joined in double figures by Mari Sanchez, with 12 points and six assists, and by Orphee Cherizard, with 10 points. Teri Jones led the Lady Aggies with seven assists to go with a team-high six rebounds. NMSU shot 46.2% from the field (30 of 65) and 41.9% from 3-point range (13 of 31). Garrett topped all players with seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts.
