ENMU Sweeps Texas Woman’s to Finish LSC Crossover Tournament at 3-0

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Eastern New Mexico University Zias swept past Texas Woman’s University, 30-17, 30-26, 30-23, at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in San Angelo, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Zias finished the Crossover Tournament with a 3-0 record. ENMU defeated Texas A&M University-Commerce, 3-1, and downed Midwestern State, 3-1, on Friday, Oct. 4.

In the win over Texas Woman’s, the Zias had five players with seven or more kills. ENMU hit .216 overall, led by setter Margie Goble (Jr., San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS), who provided a surprising nine kills on 11 attacks for a .818 hitting percentage. Raina Pilon (Sr., MB, Eagan, MN/Pasco-Hernando CC) added seven kills with a .462 hitting percentage.
April Brockmann (Sr., OH/MB, Tempe, AZ/Chandler-Gilbert CC) led all players with 11 kills. She also earned 10 digs and two block assists. Courtney Wallenborn (Sr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood CC) and Anya Mack (Jr., OH/RS, Cope, CO/Sheridan JC) each contributed seven kills for the Zias.

Mack led the Zias with 12 digs. She was followed by Brockmann’s 10 digs, plus nine digs from Wallenborn and eight digs from Goble. Wallenborn and Brockmann served two aces apiece, while Goble produced 28 assists. Christabell Mariner (Sr., MB/OH, Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna HS) achieved six kills and four digs during the match.

Texas Woman’s received seven kills from Holly Mobley, plus six kills each from Adalene Wright and April Hollub. Heather Smith and Jacque James led the Pioneers with six digs apiece. TWU hit just .091 for the match, as the Pioneers registered 30 kills, 20 errors and 110 attacks.

The Zias took command of the match with a very strong opening game. Eastern recorded 13 kills and just three attacking errors, as the Zias earned a .357 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, TWU had 10 kills and nine attacking errors in the first game.

ENMU is now 16-5 on the season. The Zias have gone 9-1 since dropping back-to-back road matches by 3-2 scores at Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Sept. 12 and Sept. 14. Texas Woman’s fell to 4-17 on the season.

Eastern travels to Lubbock, Texas, on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to play the Chaparrals of Lubbock Christian University at 6 p.m. (MST). LCU is 22-1 overall and ranked in the Top 10 in the NAIA.
