Christabell Mariner Pounds Out 19 Kills as Zias Defeat Wayland Baptist, 3-1

PORTALES, NM – Senior middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna HS) led all players with 19 kills, helping Eastern New Mexico University defeat visiting Wayland Baptist University, 3-1, Sept. 24 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias won the match, 30-13, 28-30, 30-19, 30-19, to improve to 11-4 overall. WBU dropped to 8-12 with the loss.

Mariner earned her 19 kills on just 33 total attacks. She made just three attacking errors, and finished the match with a .485 hitting percentage. Mariner also provided the Zias with five digs, six block assists, three set assists and two service aces. She is now averaging 3.7 kills per game.

The Zias, who have struggled at the start of several matches this season, wasted little time in winning the first game against the Pioneers. Eastern led 10-3 and 14-5 on its way to an easy 30-13 victory. Mariner registered five kills during the first game.

In the second game, ENMU trailed 10-6, but tied the game at 12-12. Eastern eventually led 26-23, but the Pioneers scored three consecutive points to tie the game. The score was tied again at 27-27 and 28-28, before WBU evened the match with a 30-28 win. ENMU Head Coach Mike Maguire used four players off the bench during the latter half of the second game.

Eastern took command of the match with a 30-19 win in the third game. The Zias surged out to a 12-6 advantage and led 18-9 following a kill by senior Courtney Wallenborn (RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood CC). The Zias also led 25-15 and 27-17 after kills by Mariner.
Wayland Baptist established a 4-1 lead at the start of the fourth game, but gave up three consecutive points, as the Zias tied the score. The Pioneers later rallied from a 12-9 deficit to take a 14-12 lead, only to have ENMU respond with a 9-0 run. Mariner and junior setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS) each connected for three kills during run, as ENMU built a 21-14 advantage.

The Pioneers eventually pulled within 22-17, but Eastern closed out the game with an 8-2 run. Goble added two more kills during the final offensive surge, and finished the match with six kills overall.

Three other Zias joined Mariner with double-digit kills. April Brockman (Sr., OH/MB, Tempe, AZ/Chandler-Gilbert CC) contributed 16 kills, while Wallenborn and Shannon De Arman (Sr., MB/RS, Chandler, AZ/Glendale CC) each added 12 kills. De Arman led all players with a .632 hitting percentage. She had no attacking errors on 19 total attacks.
Wallenborn earned a double-double for ENMU, finishing not only with 12 kills, but also with 12 digs. Her solid performance also included one block solo and five block assists.

Anya Mack (Jr., OH/RS, Cope, CO/Sheridan JC) produced nine kills and 13 digs for the Zias, while Goble earned 49 assists and 10 digs. Freshman libero Olivia Boan (Portales, NM/Portales HS) played in all four games and concluded the match with nine digs.
Eastern achieved a .338 team hitting percentage against the Pioneers. ENMU also earned 74 kills, 63 digs, and nine service aces. The Zias were strong at the net, finishing with 11.0 team total blocks. The Pioneers hit just .125, and earned only 39 kills and 46 digs.

WBU’s top player was Amy Smith, who achieved 12 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. Kari Gibson provided 10 kills, and Candy Fletcher earned 12 digs as the libero. Gibson dished out 18 assists, while Lindsay Havins totaled 17 assists.

The Zias will travel to Austin, Texas, this weekend to compete in the St. Edwards Powerade Classic. ENMU will take on St. Mary’s University (Texas) at 1:30 p.m. (MST) on Friday, Sept. 27. The Zias will meet the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. (MST), before playing the hosts from St. Edwards University on Saturday at 5 p.m. (MST).
