Sanchez Finishes Ninth in Men’s Race, Huskey is 10th in Women’s Race, at Texas Tech Red Raider Open

LUBBOCK, TXOrlando Sanchez (Fr., Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas HS) took ninth place in the men’s division and Karissa Huskey (So., Syracuse, NE/Nebraska Wesleyan) finished 10th in the women’s division, at the Texas Tech University Red Raider Open, Aug. 31, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Texas. It was the first meet of the season for the Greyhounds and the Zias.

Texas Tech won the overall men’s title with a score of 26. South Plains College finished second with 56 points, West Texas A&M University was third with 61 points and ENMU was fourth with 67 points. In the women’s race, Texas Tech claimed the team title with a score of 24. South Plains claimed second place at 33 points, while ENMU finished in third with 63 points. WTAMU did not enter a women’s team.

In the men’s race, Rob Kalesky of Texas Tech was the individual medalist. He registered a time of 28:50 for the 8-kilometer course. Joseph McCellon, also from TTU, placed second, finishing just four seconds behind Kalesky in 28:54.

Sanchez ran the course in 29:57 for the Greyhounds. His time was just 20 seconds behind the sixth place runner and only 35 seconds away from a Top 5 finish. Ben Muniz (Jr., El Paso, TX/El Paso Junior College) placed 11th in 30:12, while Jerry Macias (Sr., Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) took 15th place with a time of 32:16.

Also running for ENMU were Jason Andrews (Fr., Smyer, TX/Smyer HS) and Mario Cabrera (Fr., Texico, NM/Clovis HS). Andrews completed the race in 32:59 and finished in 17th place. Cabrera clocked in with a time of 33:09 and took 18th place.

The individual medalist in the women’s division was Mirram Kaumba of South Plains. She ran the 5-kilometer course in 19:35. Bridget Tidwell of Texas Tech finished second with a time of 19:43.

Huskey led ENMU with a time of 21:44. She was followed closely by Leora Shorty (Jr., Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint HS), who finished the course in 21:51. Other runners for ENMU were Bridgette Pene (Jr., Shallowater, TX/South Plains College), who took 13th place with a time of 22:05, Lynne Chavez (Fr., Cimarron, NM/Cimarron HS), who finished in 14th place in 23:04, and Miranda Bonnett (Fr., Clovis, NM/Clovis HS), who concluded the race in 23:34 to take 15th place.

The Greyhounds and the Zias will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Wayland Baptist University Meet. Race time for the women’s division is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (MST). The men’s race is set to get underway at 4:45 p.m. (MST).
