ENMU Defeats Wayland Baptist in 3-0 Sweep
Zias Defeat Pioneers, 30-25, 30-26, 30-15

PLAINVIEW, TX – April Brockmann (Sr., MB, Tempe, AZ/Chandler-Gilbert CC) registered 12 kills and provided a .500 hitting percentage, as the Eastern New Mexico University Zias defeated Wayland Baptist University, 30-25, 30-26, 30-15, on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Plainview, Texas. The victory improved the Zias to 4-1 on the season. WBU fell to 1-3.

Brockmann recorded her 12 kills on just 20 attacks with only two attacking errors. She was the only player for either team to reach double digits in kills. Brockmann also earned five digs and two block assists.

Courtney Wallenborn (Sr., RS, Camas, WA/Mt. Hood CC) added 7 kills and 9 digs for the Zias, while Anya Mack (Jr., OH/RS, Cope, CO/Sheridan JC) and Christabell Mariner (Sr., OH/MB, Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna HS) each contributed 6 kills and 12 digs. Shannyn De Arman (Sr., MB/RS, Chandler, AZ/Glendale CC) provided 5 kills and 4 block assists.

Junior setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS) supplied 23 assists and 8 digs. Wallenborn and Mariner tied for the team lead with 4 service aces apiece, helping ENMU finish the match with 13 aces overall. The Zias achieved a .256 team hitting percentage.

Wayland Baptist stayed close to the Zias in the first two games, but could not keep pace in the third game. Kari Gibson led the Pioneers with 9 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. WBU also received 5 kills each from Amy Smith and Traci Phipps. Joi Stanley and LaVoris Buckner each recorded 5 digs.

The Pioneers managed just a .100 hitting percentage during the match. WBU committed 11 ball-handling errors.

Eastern’s next matches will be in the Torneo de Amigas (Tournament of Friends), set for Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias will be joined by Adams State College, Fort Lewis College, New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico University for the round-robin event. The tournament will provide the Zias with their first home matches of 2002.

Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, with matches scheduled every two hours through 7 p.m. On Saturday, the tournament resumes at 9 a.m. and continues through the last match at 5 p.m. ENMU will play Adams State at 1 p.m. and WNMU at 7 p.m. on Friday, and will take on Fort Lewis at 9 a.m. and NMHU at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
