ENMU Track and Field Teams Compete at Texas Tech Invitational

LUBBOCK, TX – The Eastern New Mexico University track and field teams began their first season of competition since 1987 with a successful effort at the Texas Tech Invitational, Mar. 29 at R.P. Fuller Stadium. The Greyhounds and Zias were entered in a total of 18 events, and earned a total of 13 top five finishes.

Eastern athletes place second in four field events. Price Carter (Fr., Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS) took second in the javelin with a throw of 155’1”. Corey Clay (Fr., Snyder, TX/Snyder HS) placed second in the triple jump at 43’7 3/4” and took fourth in the long jump at 22’5 3/4”. In the women’s division, Stephanie Prather (So., Hagerman, NM/Hagerman HS) finished second in the javelin at 102’3” and Nicole Taute (So., Amarillo, TX/Trinity Fellowship Christian) took second in the shot put with a throw of 36’5 1/4”.

The top finisher for ENMU in a running event was provided by Ricardo Hernandez (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad HS), who earned third place in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:57.80. Karissa Huskey (So., Syracuse, NE/Nebraska Wesleyan University) took fifth place for the Zias in the 3000-meter run after clocking in at 11:41.64.

Eastern claimed third, fourth, seventh and eighth in the women’s discus. Jayme Williams (Fr., Dumas, TX/Dumas HS) took third at 121’11”. Charlotte Sanchez (Fr., Las Vegas, NM/Robertson HS) placed fourth at 119’11”. Daquita Mitchell (Fr., Anton, TX/Anton HS) finished seventh with a throw of 101’5”, and Robyn Anders (Fr., Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft HS) took eighth at 99’4”.

Jaron Singleton (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad HS) edged out teammate Jett Lovelace (Fr., Weatherford, TX/Weatherford HS) for fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.04 seconds. Lovelace placed sixth in 16.07 seconds.

The Greyhounds and Zias will return to action at the Tarleton Relays, set for Apr. 4-5 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. The Tarleton Relays will likely feature many of the area’s top NCAA Division II athletes.
